North Carolina

I have been off the radar for chicken news, spent the last 2 days sanding down the 85yo hardwoods in the new (old) house. Today moved a few more loads of boxes over. All week will be moving and working.
On the chicken front, Ashley has my SLW eggs in the incubator!! Yay, I will have my babies hatching in a few weeks, just in time for my birthday.

Quote: I went ahead and called before I went up there today. They do prefer the crates that are sold for ($1.00- I think), But this time of year they don't mind the boxes as long as the bird has proper ventilation. I was told that if they feel different at the check in they will ask you to get a crate. I did see some boxes that I do think needed more air flow, and there were about 4 chickens, and one Pea-fowl that got loose. The ones that got loose may have had the wire not attached well enough to the card board or other wire.hen it gets hot, they will insist on crates, or some other method. Baby chicks should NOT go in crates.

I had my husband use a doorknob hole attachment & drill larger holes in my boxes before I put straw or birds in them. They were large boxes too. I like to treat my animals humanely, even if I am getting rid of them. If I did not answer your query let me know what more I can help with. I don't have all the answers, but I will help when I can.

OK another dumb question time....

I have been reading Dog killed my chickens, I killed the dog Thread ( https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/531652/dog-killed-my-chickens-i-killed-the-dog/250 ) and wonder if anyone knows, (DUH), what the law in NC is???

Can I kill an animal that threatens my animals??? Are they considered livestock?

Do I have to call Animal control or the sheriff or is SSS the best way to go???.

I have protected my animals before but after reading that thread thought I should ask how it works in NC.
Thanks for any answers...
I think Scoop is right.

I had a neighbor's dogs killing and dragging my birds over an acre of my land and around the corner to another neighbor's land, and I had been told by local law enforcement that I could not shoot the dog, and then animal control was flaky too. One guy was sympathetic to my loss, and understood that it was an even bigger problem, because he watched one of the two dogs lunge like it was going to come over the fence while he was speaking to the owner. The other was annoyed that the chickens were free ranging on our property... like the birds went into the fence with the starving dog, and its very large aggressive buddy. I told the man if it goes after one of the kids I would shoot it and take what ever punishment I had to.

With coyotes it is OK to kill when they are with your live stock for sure..... That one I tried, I called wild life, and so on,.... to get traps set and all, but they just said shoot them when livestock is involved. Good luck if you have an issue with a neighbor's dog. I would try to talk to, but if that does not work.... I don't know what happened could work. By the way, how you like the new tree I just planted over here? ...or roses, tomatoes. what ever you wish to fertilize???

Good Morning Folks!!

Well...we had our first violent cock fight on Saturday while we were out moving logs/trees for the garden area. Finally decided that 2 weeks locked up (no eggs to show for it too) was time enough and DH let them out first thing in the morning yesterday. ALL the birds were VERY happy to be out and about...so much so that the ducks took several baths (don' t know why they wouldn't bathe in their "tub" in the run) and found the railing rather sunny and perched there the rest of the day...leaving us HUGE treasure bombs in the way!! LOL. DH said, "Boy, I missed seeing these girls up on the deck...but I did NOT miss their droppings!"

As soon as he said that...Cadbury gave him the mother load of all "presents"!! LOL.

Okay...meat bird question (since it's getting close to that time of year). We have decided to order some Freedom Ranger Meat Birds (they are a little slower than the Cornish X but they are not dumb and capable of growing to a decent slaughter size in 12 weeks free ranging)...when you order from a hatchery, I know you get chicks...can my chicks (if it's spring) go outside in our brooder box, or do they have to stay inside? This will be our FIRST year ordering chicks (and doing the whole thing to boot) and I must admit...I prefer it when someone else <coughs> BETH <coughs> deals with the chicks and I take over once they are able to go outside...LOL So...advice?? You all are the BEST!!

Hollow - just thought you'd like to know I asked DD if she wanted to meet your dogs...she said NO MA'AM...then she found out you had bunnies and cows and she changed her mind.

She has been asking for a bunny for her birthday (which she thinks is every month) since she visited Beth's and saw her bunnies, and we drive past a few cows on our way to church and she keeps asking for one (they're steers) so she can have milk (hey, I am NOT about to go into THAT lesson with her just yet)!!

And a good morning to you all from us! Mananged to hatch out 22 Silkies over the last 2 days.... Placed 38 eggs in lockdown - no I do not candle - so not complaining too much. Also have some Swedish Flower Hen eggs incubating from my girls....
Congrats on your good silkie hatch! I've been reading on another thread about someone who only had one of her Catdance silkies hatch - it was really weird. I did not realize they were so difficult to hatch....

Do you know what colors you got?

Angela
