I did try a splint on mine, the chick kept falling over so it didn't last long

sad day... my best broody and only chicken not in a pen (the dog of the bunch) jumped the fence into the neighbors yard.....and their dog thought it was wanting to play

It's not the neighbors fault nor the dogs but he just kind of ignored the dead chicken in his yard

they don't take care of the dog at all. It just makes me angry that he just ignored it. I jumped the fence and got her and we buried her and I transplanted some flowers on top of her grave. The worst of it is the GF and her emotions....it was her favorite chicken.

I had to spill the beans and tell her i bought her an incubator to let her know we had bred her favorite roo and momma and we have about 18 of those eggs. Other than that hope everyone enjoys their day.

Welcome Chickies in NC!! We hope you jump right in and let us know what you have/want and make yourself right at home. Everyone here is SO helpful and friendly, I hope you feel "at home"!!

I am so sorry for your loss Luke!!

Tarheel - good luck with that biddie...I have NO experience in that aspect, so I will just keep my crossables crossed for it!

Wild - I have no idea about things like that, but I am keeping my crossables crossed for your little one to make it too!! Sounds like you are doing a good job to me!! Keep us posted please.

Beth - I do hope the mini Mafia get their bums whipped and they get to be on the receiving end of some intense pressure!! LOL

So duck question for you duck owners/raisers/experienced lot...how would I know if (since I haven't "seen it" happen) Cadbury is doing his "thing" - or if the girls are ready to lay? He's been walking around the girls in circles the past 2 days hissing and stretching his neck and doing what looks like a wiggle dance..didn't know if it was some kind of courtship ritual like what some birds do (peacocks puffing up and showing their tail feathers or some birds puffing up to show off their colors, etc..). He has also been sporting a "mowhawk" lately when around the girls. Could "love" be in the air??

How do you know when a girl is ready to lay some eggs?? (I don't know how old my girls are, nor if they've ever laid an egg before...lol or when they'd start laying IF they haven't started a hidden stash somewhere) Thank you for your words of wisdom!! Spring is in the air...I'm ready for March to come and with it some dry sunny days!!

Happy Last Day In February everyone!!

Welcome to the new folks!

Sorry about the chick, Wild. Only so much you can try. I've got one I'll have to put down, as it has a slipped tendon that won't stay in. Was hatched that way a couple days ago. Sometimes the tendons will stay put when slipped back, but this one won't. A shame, as it's otherwise a strong, healthy chick. But again, only so much can be tried.

Jake was sooooo happy to come to work today! When I pulled out his harness, he was wagging and wiggling so hard I had trouble getting it on him! I'm so pleased that he's been cleared to work again, but I know it is temporary. Hopefully he can hold out until Levi is ready to take over. Levi starts beginner obedience next week. (And he weighed in at 58 pounds at the vet yesterday. Tomorrow he turns 15 weeks.) After Spring Break, he'll start coming with me on my non-teaching days, to start getting used to elevators and crowds and shiney floors and such. He'll be learning more things than Jake, as he's got a stronger personality for it, so we can start on some of it while he's a pup. He can learn to push the handicap door opening buttons for us, and how to open doors that don't have them. (With a rope handle I'll bring). He'll also be learning to retrieve things I drop or indicate to him that I want. He's got to practice more wearing a harness, so when he gets his mobility harness he'll be okay with that. He can't do mobility training until he's 18 months/growth plates close, but lots to learn in the meantime. I'll be putting him in competitve obedience too, which should be fun.

Dogs and chickens, chickens and dogs. Love them both!

Afternoon everyone!
Decided to weigh my chicks to make sure my "deformed beak" chick is doing OK. They are 3 weeks old this past Tuesday (3/26) Used my kitchen food scale and the results are:
chick 1 (marble) = 6.6 oz chick 2 (goldie) = 7.4 oz Twin chick 3 = 6.5 oz twin chick 4 = 7.9 oz chick 5 (scissor - deformed beak) 6.3 oz chick 6 (feathers) 9.4

As you can see, the deformed beak chick is the smallest. I see her eating, mostly when the others aren't interested and she makes a mess.

The above names will probably change when their feathers and coloring is totally in.

Question.... How did you guys begin saling your eggs? Do any of you csa your eggs?

How much do you charge? Juat starting to research all of this.
Hi Soupy.

Since no one else answered you, I thought I would. Sometimes, this is a hard bunch to crack.

For me, I just put a sign out front, saying "Mixed brown eggs for sell".

I get some regular and some hit and miss customers. Summer I get the tourists.... I break even most months while some I make more and others less.... This is a hobby/pets first and a small business 2nd due to getting more eggs than I can use....

I am not sure what CSA is????

I have a range of prices depending on the customer. I sell small and medium eggs cheaper than Medium and larger eggs and keep the monster eggs for myself.

I do have my freebie customers, which means we barter. Eggs for him and veggies as they rippen.
I have my regular custs that pay the old price while new ones pay the higher price as feed has gone up.
Of course my prices went up for everyone this year due to feed going sky high.... about 25 cents....
Of course I have my charity customers that are either sick or just down on their luck. That is what they can afford. Most pay me back in full as things get better. I guess I have some good people in my area....

Really it depends on the area you live in and what the market, or customers can afford.

Just remember, if you have alot of chickens, you could always sell at a farmers market and get up to 5 bucks or more a dozen or sell from the house and get 1.75 to 3.00 or more a dozen... it really depends what the area will handle....

Good luck and remember, if you are thinking it as a business only, you are missing out on alot of fun with your chickens.

that sounds like its too much to remember!! I like the barter system and I sell eggs to my neighbor $2.00 a dozen and $3.00 for 18 but i really consider it all hush money to keep the neighbors from complaining. And it works for me!
