Okay thanks, I'm gonna wait for it to warm up a little more and then give her a bath and dust again. I dusted their pen real well and added some DE to the dusting area.[/quote
U will need the Sevin!! The Ivomec stuff wont touch these mites...also the spray on Adam.s flea stuff for dog & ticks works..but got to get the stuff with "Pes..".something in it.

I know it is not much help for you now, AB, but I have always contended that chicken wire is for chicken, and not predators. I'm sorry for your loss, but even welded wire won't hold for a large enough predator. I guess others can learn from our losses this early in the year. That attack that I lost the nine in just recently, it got into chain-link, and welded wire (2 different runs). Last years coyote massacre wiped out over 20, plus duck and Goat. That was a welded wire fence, and cattle fencing. They also got into the house after they got into the fence.

No matter how hard you try, there will still be some losses, the the time I walked in to treat the birds with my son, and he told me, "that is a bad rooster, mommy." This conversation went on for a few minutes before I realized that there was a Hawk inside the habitat with us, and it was feasting on one of our hens. She had great camouflage.

We do our best, and often we feel like it is not enough, or that defeated, we failed our chickens feeling, but we always take something new away from it, and learn a new experience. Whether it be a good, or bad experience, we still grow with each. Sharing these things that happen can also help someone else grow with more confidence.

Because our pred are mostly large, or fly, we now have solar powered pred-lights by the main houses, and use smaller heavier gage welded wire, and chain-link. All fences that are not completely enclosed are 6' If they have young enough to attack from above, we have them covered all year, not just for heat. Small bear traps by the bigger houses, and houses were improved to make it more difficult to get into, and we strive to teach the birds to all go in before lock-down each night (safety).

I am not sure what all I can do to keep the new Pea fowls safe, and I am open to any ideas. We are starting with having them penned, and are seeing where to go from here. Food for thought is always a great thing.

Can some of the others on here that have been raised with birds, or are raising birds, and other livestock, now give some ideas for how they keep their birds, healthy and safe? I think that this is a topic that could use some attention this time of year.

livestock guardian dogs!

Wild, Dawn dish washing liquid will kill most bugs, but not eggs... May have to folloow up. We have used it on dogs for years. Also, if you have... Permethrin, at 10%, (plant based)... will not have to repeat if you do living space, and others as well. and I still would not spray eyes with anything. I have never had any birds get sick from either.

atmaclean, Love the Gardian dog idea!

They are quite costly too (I have adopt pound/shelter pups... not that they can not cost an arm and a leg too), but so loyal, and geogeous creatures. I have had them on my wish list for a long time now. I do believe I will wait until the boys have left the nest.

Still, great idea!

Anyone else have some great ideas for keeping our flocks safe?

I have had chickens for about 6 years now one thing that has always seem to help is plastic netting on top of the pens.

We have alot of hawks in the area.

But my biggest problem seems to be the neighbors dogs! My hubby is wanting to put electric wire around the whole property. But I would probable be the one to get zapped !! He's still upset he lose three of his new babies a few weeks ago, still don't know what got them. No Bodies....just a few feathers. Hope everyone enjoys this beautiful weather.

What a beautiful Sunday! So happy for good weather this afternoon and for the kids taking a nap on the same time : )

Got the coop gate up along with a pop door made in the side of the coop and a roost put up for all the ladies.

I have three Cornish that will probably be processed next weekend. Exciting to start weeding those guys out!

The ladies got to go out in the run for a couple hours this afternoon once I got the gate completed. They loved it!

Now I am ready for a nap... what a minute... it is too late!

What kind of sevin dust am I looking for? They have a small bottle of it up here at the feed store, it says sevin for plant and pest control??
5% carbaryl sevin dust. It only comes in 1 pound plastic(yellow/red) shake cans now for alot more $$$ then it used to. I really miss the $8 five pound bags I used to be able to get just a few years ago. The cheapest place I find it now is Lowes hardware in 3 packs.

I am looking for some pullets that are at POL. I have many babies but it will be June before they are laying :( I am needing to have more eggs to keep my customers happy! Had to turn folks down the past few weeks. Does anyone have anything near the Triad Area of NC? Also, would love if anyone had any olive eggers and/or guinea keets that they may be bringing to the big show the end of March in Winston Salem...???

Thanks!
Angela
