North Carolina

Yes I agree with you on the racism part! I never realized until my children (all bi-racial) came along how bad it really was. I suppose I lived in my own sheltered world until then. May I say I apologize for all of my fellow North Carolinian that may still hold on to the ignorant views we were raised with!

if you look at the first you can see his comb is bigger and redder than the other, and I am assuming that they are around 2 months old. Most roosters get bigger and redder combs and wattles way before the hens will, most of the time. Now huge single comb breeds like leghorns are a little harder to tell and takes some practice because the hens will get bigger combs earlier than other breeds. Now with ee's certain colors/ patterns are male/ female only. And with his color/ pattern chances ain't good that he's a girl. Around the 3 to 4 month mark he'll start getting darker red shinny feathers in his neck and wing bows and saddle area (area on back right in front of the tail base) Hope this helps you out Busymadre

go to the what breed what gender section and look through, you'll learn about the different breeds and how to sex them. It does take time, but can be done

I was born and raised in San Jose and then moved to the Central Valley to raise my kids.

I was born and raised in Texas but have lived all over the US including over a year in San Jose/Cupertino and six months in Orange County. Before moving to Asheville for a year and finally to Forest City a year ago, I lived for six years in Oregon and Washington.

Disadvantages (at least for me) are difficulty finding friends, humidity, lack of cultural diversity and the fact that SERIOUS racism still exsists here.

Finding friends: I have the same problems here. I bought what I could afford in the country and now I have a neighbor that plays loud music, lets their trash blow onto my land, and that won't speak to me. I have another racist neighbor that is friendly. I just stand my ground and the other option is to just keep quiet. I'm not good at keeping quiet!

People in NC are a stand-offish lot, but I have found in life that people have a reason for the way they act and I can only control my own actions. I do what I always do....hit them with my Texas friendly. Most people here will respond in kind after they take a good hard look at you.

People on this forum are very friendly! I can't help you with the humidity, it's a killer!

But every place has it's good and bad, and for the most part, I'm glad I moved here. After all, living here has brought chickens into my life!

Ditto! I love my little piece of Mother Earth and I love chickens! Now I just need to find a decent organic feed source without shipping costs.

We moved up here from SC, and so far I love NC, we have met a lot of wonderful friendly down to earth people. At least here polk county, there is no such thing as a stranger, only a friend you have yet to meet. In SC life was so fast passed that no one had the time to stop and say hello. Here everybody waves and smiles, in SC you would wave at a stranger and they would look at you like your were some axe murderer. I am also amazed at how people here have a want to help others and those in need, I have never before met so many angels in my life, living here as certainly made me believe that God's angels do walk amongst us.

Good morning!

I've decided I'm truly chick-deranged. We went to two pig-pickins yesterday, and were gone from 3:00 in the afternoon until about 10:00 last night.  I had moments of anxiety that I left my chicks at home that long.  Reality check when I got home and everyone's fine and acts like you're bothering them when you walk in.  They don't even notice I'm gone, LOL.

Thats hilarious!

Good Monday Morning everyone!!

WELCOME to all the new folks!!  I hope you enjoy your stay with us...there are LOTS of really friendly & helpful enablers ... err - I mean people on here! ;)

Got rid of one of our roosters last night...the "pretty" Cochin Splash x Buff Orpington little guy...he is now alpha male to 4 pretty hens (well, he will be once his quarantine is over with!!) I am happy to be rid of another ROOSTER - it's one I don't have to feed nor process, so it's all good.  The gal fell in love with Cadbury (said "wow he's big)...I had to keep an eye on her to make sure he stayed with us...haha...JK
Who else has planting fever?  I want to get my garden planted and growing...DH and I have been working long hours to get the garden set up and I am so unfamiliar with NC weather, I don't know when to plant what.  LOL.  Since you're suppose to plant most weeks after the last possible frost...WHEN have we had frost lately?!?  LOL...yes, I am THAT anxious!  My tomato sprouts are doing SO well compared to how they did last year, I am hopeful.  Maybe, just MAYBE my black thumb is turning slightly green?!?

On a family note...today is THE day we take the youngest to the specialist at Duke for her consultation/testing with the geneticist...we're in for a LONG LONG day.  Best part: DH is home with me to help, AND I scheduled a shopping play date with a friend...so regardless of the outcome...it's a good day!  :)

I hope you all have a wonderful day!!

i have planting fever too!! Anxiously watching my seedlings for growth. Have herbs, peppers, tomatoes, watermelons all started.

Vienna area of Pfafftown, right at the Lewisville border. Born and raised here my whole life and love it!

I used to live in Clemmons area, and Lewisville/pfafftown was part of my school nursing district.
