Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

I could Not get up this morning, then had to scurry to get everyone fed and watered. Still need to get ready for work, but I'm still lazy this morning. Can't afford to be lazy. Tuesday and Thursday are my long days at work, and totally exhausting. Still.....Friday is off!

Enjoy your day!

Morning all! Took some pictures last night (especially of "scissor")

You can see her beak the best in the pic below.

Below: She is on the food container. She walks around the perimeter eating & eating (the container is raised off the floor with a few brick blocks to keep the bedding material out. Seems to be working well.

Can't really tell from the below pic, but she has lost some neck feathers on her right side from the other feeder I was using where she had to get her neck in and out to get her food. Hoping they grow in again.

So... any suggestions about her beak?? Will trimming it do any good or should I just let it go?

$3/doz seems high.  People don't mind spending that much?  I am in Hickory, NC and do not have eggs yet - hopefully by mid June and with 7 girls, I think I will need to sell some.  Hoping I have "7" by then.  I have that one runt with the scissor beak so every day she is around is a blessing.
Gonna see if my paramedic friend who works part-time for a vet will cut her bottom beak and see if that helps. We have a large feeder that you fill and it filters down to an open ring around the bottom with dividers.  She was loosing her neck feathers from poking her head inside the "chick" tray type feeder.  Now she hops up on the rim of the regular feeder and goes round and round eating and eating.  If she makes it to laying age, her eggs will probably be small.  She doesn't mind me holding her like she use to.  Glad that the other girls don't try to irritate her.

well, I can't keep up with the demand for my egg at 3 dollars a dozen. folks know that they cannot get the same quality eggs at the grocery store.

As for your cross peek chicken, I just file my girl's down with a fingernail file it's really no big deal.if you file it, you have less of a chance of making her bleed than if you cut it. Good luck. My cross beak girl has done just great and lays eggs for me too! ;)

Good (Late) Morning everyone!!

Not much going on here...saw my ducks "nesting" in a pile of leaves yesterday - got SO excited thinking they might have laid an egg (or 20?!? LOL) but nothing. I'm hoping they are "testing" the area out and will soon be laying as all of my layers are doing their jobs...all BUT the ducks. Seriously, what do I need to do to these ladies to get them "in gear?" LOL

On a baby note: I am officially in the LAST trimester and I am ALREADY ready to be done!! LOL

Alex - DH said he'd be interested but we don't have a place for her - no shelter, no fence, etc... What is the "minimum" we could get away with?!? That will give us a better idea of what to expect. Let me know!!

Have a great day everyone!!

Hollow: Did you say tsc this Saturday? I can try to make it. The GF thinks she's going to pop any day now but we've still got 6 weeks, and I have WAY too much stuff to get done!!!
ON a chicken note, 17 out of 30 hatched!!!! Only one of the strawberry brahma projects tho =( a bunch of buffs and darks and a few lights. I'm really excited cuz it's the first incubator hatch!!!! happy Thursday everyone!

Thanks - Just trying to get an idea for pricing eggs I hope to get early summer. You are about an hour and 1/2 away from me:)
Posted some pics of my "special" scissor beak girl if you want to check them out.

have a great day

NH, I found a hidden turkey nest with 16 eggs. I replaced them with a couple golf balls, and they are still laying there...and sharing the nest!

For a temporary shelter, arc a cattle panel, use short fence T-posts or even tent stakes to brace it, then tarp it. Some people use those as year-round shelters, but I've had them collapse in snow so I don't. If you don't have/can't get a cattle panel, then any framework that's tarped will work for temporary shelter.

Hi everyone! I live in Taylorsville, NC and I LOVE that so many fellow North Carolinians are members here raising flocks of their own! I have 3 three-week old ducklings and loving every minute of it (well, most of them
