North Carolina

Lesson of the day, be careful what you name your pets. Back in November, we had four chicks die due to the cold. Three days later, I realized that we had one chick more than we should have after the recent deaths so I named that extra chick Lazarus.

Since then, I've tried to cull the extra roosters two times by releasing the extra roosters (I've never "Processed" any chickens yet but having so many roosters was taking a toll on the hens) and each time Lazarus has miraculously ended up back in the pen with the hens. Well, last week, the dog killed both roosters that were free and I was down to only ten Chickens; eight hens and two roosters. I had feathers to prove it all over the yard!!

Well I just came in from working out at the pen and imagine my surprise when I spied Lazarus back in the pen after being "Dead" since last week. I have no idea how he keeps coming back to life, not to mention how he keeps getting back in the pen. I guess Lazarus is back to stay this time. If I let another rooster out I will have to let "Red" out since the other rooster is Andy's that he named Hunter. Though if anyone wants Lazarus or Red (both EE's) they are welcomed to come get them.

Happy Easter!

Well, when I went out to feed and do chores, poor ole Bob was on his back. We righted him, but he stumbles about and ends back on his back. As soon as it's late enough not to disturb people, hubby will shoot our poor old turkey. Bob would have been eight years old next month. He's the oldest guy on the place.

And with him gone, I will be selling all the rest of the turkeys. I only kept them for company for Bob. Perhaps a new start with a new breed is what I should try. Or just no turkeys at all.

I've known we'd be losing Bob this year, but I thought he'd have a bit more time. I'm sad. Toss a handful of scratch to your birds in memory of the best tom turkey ever! Bob has allowed a school group of fourth graders to line up and pet him, has played tag with the dogs and seemed to enjoy it, reaaallly enjoyed sneaking up on a sleeping dog and goosing him, and when he was younger would jump into my lap if I sat on a lawn chair outside. I'm gonna miss the old guy.

I have several chicks ranging in age from 2 weeks to 6 weeks. Should I seperate the older chicks from the younger and when can I stop putting a heat lamp on them at night and when can let them out them in the enclosed run and I have 3 red pullets that are a year old, when and how can I introduce them to being in the same run? Sorry so many questions!

I looked at Walmart for comparison- their free-range/cage-free were over $3. I charged $3 without a carton and $3.50 if I provided the carton, since that's what they cost me.

I haven't had any eggs to sell here yet, so we'll see. I knew someone before we moved who tried to sell his really cheap and people wouldn't buy them. I personally thought it was because they were too cheap which left people wondering what was wrong with them...........
$3 doesn't sound unreasonable. Besides Wal-Mart free range eggs aren't really free range. Free range in Wal-Mart terms is 2sq ft of space per bird and a door on the building which doesn't necessarily have to be opened.

This is what I just got done doing

She is blowing her coat big time, I think spring is on the way.
Best horse I've ever been over fences on. The chiropractor was here the other day to do her adjustment and she asked me how often she was being ridden and I said "not much". Blades (my chiro) then asked me if I was retiring her and my trainer and I both burst out laughing. She's just getting started.

I guess it runs in the family, her mother is 29 this year and we just got done having an argument about whether she was going to do a simple leg yield, like I wanted her to do, or whether we were going to do half pass at the hand-gallop like she wanted to do. So glad I chose Arabians, they're like little energizer bunnies.

I feel like the hair will never stop coming, though. They just keep shedding and shedding.

*Exactly.* Most people don't know that, though. And those are USDA standards-I actually wrote about those eons ago. REAL eggs have no comparison to commercially produced eggs, imo. :D

Oh heck, all of ours completely shed out weeks ago. We were thinking the groundhog might have been right, lol.

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

I get to do my chores in the rain again. Lovely. On the other hand, I don't have to haul water to all those plants we put in! Fair trade in my book!

Enjoy the day!
