ok I have another question for you experienced hatchers. I've read where you say that the eggs are going to lockdown. What does that mean? I'm going to put 4 Silkie eggs in the bator tomorrow. I'm letting it run for 24 hours before i put any eggs in as i've been told to do. This is the first time using a bator. Last time I had some broody Silkies and had only one to hatch out of about 10 or so. Told I was lucky to do that because I had 2 different girls setting and they kept switching eggs. Thanks for any help

You don't open the incubator from day 18 until all are hatched - if all do not hatch I would wait 24 hours after the last chick hatches and if no more have pipped then quickly grab the hatched chicks and move them to the brooder and close your incubator back and wait to see if any more hatch. Ideally given the correct temps all the chicks should have pipped by day 22 and all hatched by day 24 - but I usually wait till day 26 to make sure that no more are going to hatch (or just candle the remaining eggs to make sure the chicks are alive and I see movement - unless they are extremely dark in color.) Hope this helps.

Lock down is to make sure that the humidity level of the incubator stays high enough for the chicks to hatch without getting stuck. Personally, I don't do lock down - because the humidity level stays fairly high where I am here in Wilkes County. Keep an eye on your humidity levels and use your own judgement.
Lock Down for me = very high humidity which = drowned chicks (discovered this the hard way).

do u have other chicks in with it that r bigger?.... this is very confusing

I did have a cream legbar chick in with it but took her out today because she knocked the tolbunt polish over and was just too exuberant to be with the sick baby. Baby finally did poop and it was a normal looking poop. Still no pasty butt issues. The crop had emptied so I fed it again tonight with the syringe and it is still not acting right. Just sitting huddled with its wings dropped down. So sad.

Since it is eating and pooping, I am not sure what could be wrong. I am afraid that it won't make it as you say, Matt. I will feed it as long as I can since I don't want to watch it starve. So sad that they have these types of genetic problems due to the coloring. I am preparing myself for the worst but hoping for a miracle, I guess. Not sure what else I can do.

Oh a happier note, I got one of my final exams for grad school out of the way tonight. I had taken the day off to study, thank goodness. That is how I was able to monitor the little sick chick all day and feed it as often as I could.

Hollow - I didn't realize the teachers were as happy as the students to finish the semester! LOL!

Still have some big projects due and another final then the Praxis 2 on May 11. After that, I will be done for the semester - hallelujah! Then I will reward myself by going to Chickenstock! LOL!

Hoping to work on breeding some of my purebreeds once I'm done and will have more time to devote to that project.

Dang y'all have small babies! My first was early by 5 days and was 8.2 the second was late by 4 days and was 8.11 the third was late by 2 days and was 9.4

Mine were 9 lbs 3.5 oz, and 9 lbs 4.5 oz.
