I hatched a little Tolbount Polish chick on Saturday so its 5 days old. It was given to me at a Show a few weeks ago. Here is what I've been doing:

It is in a rubbermaid brooder with a heat emitter - temp is fine, paper towels on floor.

The other chick in with it is totally normal and energetic (about a week older but has been in the same brooder) I've used this set-up to hatch about 50 chicks this year

They are fed a chick starter/grower

I keep vitamins/electrolytes in their water with a tiny bit of ACV

They are on paper towels for bedding.

The chick is not really eating. I saw it peck at the food when the other chick was eating but only twice and I don't think it got any food.

I have dipped its beak in the water a few times.

I am wondering if it is possible to hand-feed chicks like you do baby birds? I've raised a couple of parrots in the past - hand fed with a syringe and the Kaytee Exotic hand feeding formula. I have some of this on hand and wondered if I could give it to this chick?

Chick is just sitting under heat lamp kind of huddled down - it can walk but doesn't move much unless I make it. It peeps every once in a while. Just seems very weak and not wanting to eat/drink.

There was a tiny little piece of poop on its butt this morning which I removed but I have not seen any pasty butt type stuff.

Please respond if you have any suggestions or know if I can syringe feed this baby. I was so thrilled that the egg hatched and I don't want to lose this little one. Our local veterinarians have no clue about chickens other than basic feeding info and other common issues.

I also posted this on the emergency thread but I know some of you all are very experienced chick raisers....

Thanks so very much!

I would not hand feed.. chicks aspirate very easy.
Tolbunts and Polish in general are not a very hardy chicks. IMO
Sounds like you are doing everything right...don't beat yourself up if e doesn't make it.

yes some chicks just die!!! But there are breeds where it is harder to get them to live, the tulbunts are one of these. This is why I wont buy any as they are hard to raise and the prices are to high for me to even think about it right now. Good luck

Ugh!

When you hand feed the baby parrots, you have to aim the syringe toward the left side of their throat so you don't aspirate them...it can be very tricky too. I wonder if the chicks aspirate even easier than the exotic parrots? I'm willing to try whatever since this is my one and only chance of getting a Tolbunt Pol....??

I agree they are very expensive but didn't know they were hard to raise :( My husband would never let me buy them so when I was given this egg - it was like a treasure to me. I am so worried about it and hate to just watch it die.

Good morning folks

I snuck out and did diapers yesterday while the sun was out and brought them in as soon as it started getting cloudy!! I think - THINK - I may have pulled one over on the weather man....THIS time!!

All you new folks...

x2 (ish) WELCOME to all the new folks!!
it's amusing how doctors pass out "due dates" like they
are THE day the baby arrives when in all reality that
baby gets here on their time schedule and the doctor

gets in a lucky estimate once in awhile. I went over the
due date by 10 days and more with all 3 of our girls. They
arrived when they wanted and this Saturday DD#1 and DD#3
celebrate their day......and yes........both born on a Friday......
5 years apart
th.gif
couldn't have planned that one
ep.gif

so I need to bake up 2 cakes

our day is a good one
thumbsup.gif
LOL!! I have YET to hit a due date!! I LOVE how doctors tell me it's 99% accurate when it's based on the Ultrasound....really?!? DD1- late, DD2 - early, Baby #3 - praying for EARLY (say a month!! LOL) We'll see on that one... Anyway, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to DD's 1 & 3!!!! I LOVE baking cakes - miss it at times in fact...but then I remember how stressed I would get praying everything would come out JUST RIGHT, and then I am happy I raise ducks and chickens now instead. LOL

Having a good day, excited that DH FINALLY comes home tomorrow from training. DD2 has NOT been fond of him being away and has been SUPER clingy. That makes it hard to get things done, but I'll take the snuggles as she isn't a snuggler anymore!! So I know for a fact that 2 of my ducks are laying...(interrupted them each once in different places) and yet I am still only getting 1 egg a day.

I sure wish I could find the other "magical" spots!! Daphne likes the strawberry patch and Reeces Cream likes the "hole" she's made under the ladder in the coop, although if there's a chicken laying an egg in the nesting box, she will lay hers in the one directly beneath it.

Daisy & Hershey....well, they are laying somewhere, I just don't know... LOL. OH, and last night, I either saw a HUGE cat or a HUGE opossum on my deck...it raced off before I could get a closer look, but if it's an opossum, I don't suppose I'll EVER find those eggs!! Anyway, have a lovely day everyone. I'll keep my fingers crossed that the rain stays away...at least until Monday (so your weekend plans aren't interrupted!!)

You can try offering it some egg yolk, just dip its beak the yolk so that it will eat/swallow it.
