Good Late afternoon everyone! The only news I have to report is.... I have TWO duck eggs!! So far I have had a duck lay in the strawberry patch and one lay in the coop...there was an egg in the coop this morning (I suspect a first timer egg, because it was darker in color and a bit smaller...like the first one we got not that long ago) and when we went out this afternoon to do some chores, there was ANOTHER ONE in there!!

Maybe my girls are learning that the best place to lay their eggs is in the coop?? Hehe...then again, she does lay probably every other day IN the strawberry patch. Oh well...so long as she keeps it to those two places, I'll be happy!!
I'm VERY happy that the weatherman was WRONG today and our cold, rainy weather skipped us and we ended up with some beautiful sunshine and nice temperatures. I managed to get laundry done (even diapers...take THAT weather man), a duck pool cleaned out, freshened up the mama's "den" and got a first set of plantings in for our beans. I plan to do another few plantings over the coming weeks, so we can have a LONG harvest of beans, plus this crop (IF it takes) will be what we plan to let dry for dried beans!! My first attempt ever. This fall, we're planting oats & lentils (since we have them, why not experiment) just to see how it works. It would be nice "fodder" for the chickens and ducks IF they take as well!!

Hope everyone was able to get outside and enjoy the sunshine today!! I got burnt...lol, but that happens to those of us who are PASTY white!! LOL. Enjoy WCA tomorrow those of you going and know I will be there in spirit....and someday....someday...in person!!

Just wondering if any of you more experienced chicken owners might have any suggestions for me on a post that I created in the EMERGENCY category? I have a new chick that is for lack of a better word - different - she walks on her hocks and I can't seem to find anything that resembles what it is. Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is the first "un-normal" chicken that I have ever had (unless a rooster that will sit on nests of eggs counts - but thats another story). Thanks.

Congrats on your exam. Ready for some keets? Hatch May 15, and you're first on the list. Let me know.

Probably will need some - and my neighbor is now wanting to get a flock - 30 or so. May 15 sounds good. That will be AFTER my semester of Graduate school is over! YEAH!

We have found some sporadic eggs around the pasture. Hubby has found several while bushogging. I've got 8 under my broody lemon cuckoo orp and 8 inside in an incubator..... I've never let a hen hatch eggs before so I hope she doesn't bale on the 21st day when they don't hatch!!

Well, I am sad to say that the little Tolbunt Polish that I hatched out didn't make it. I am so sad

I have no idea what could have been wrong. I had fed it so I know it didn't starve. It had food in its crop when it died. It had normal poops. I've left messages for some poultry folks at NCSU to see if they have any ideas. I also posted on the Polish list to see if they had any ideas since they breed them a lot....

The Call Duck egg has pipped, on a happier note. My son is just ecstatic! He is at work right now and keeps texting me to see if it has hatched! LOL! I told him it can take at least 24 hrs to hatch - maybe more....

So sorry to hear.

Hopefully someone will be able to figure it out.

I had forgot to say about my DH constructing two homemade feeders for me today.

I saw the homemade ones out of PVC pipe and I thought that would be a great idea. I had a hanging feeder but the chickies kept knocking it around and I lost a lot of feed.

He will probably won't let me go to Home Depot anymore. Each time I go there I come home with something for him to do. Two days ago I came home with pavers and stone for in front of the coop and he got to work on it right away for me. I don't know how many more times he will just do my little projects before getting annoyed.

Here's the pavers he put down for me. It looks so cute now!

That is so cute! My girls free range and go into the barn at night, so I don't get to have a cute coop :(. I have coop envy!
