North Carolina

Hello to my fellow North Carolinians! I am new to raising a backyard flock, new to BYC and {fairly} new to NC!  What an exciting time.  We are in Wayne County.
Welcome, welcome, welcome...to BYC, and NC!

Hey, is there a swap scheduled next Saturday, a week from tomorrow, anywhere? I've decided which birds I'm cutting back, so would like to do the swap the day before I'm going to the auction. I'm going to cut back on the rose comb brown leghorns and sell off a quad, sell a pair of speckled Sussex, and cut down the Buff Orpingtons. I want to grow out all the Wellies from all the sources before I decide what to keep and what to sell. Same on the BBS Ameraucanas. Not sure if I want to keep breeding stock on those or just use them to make more EEs and OEs. I think I'll have to grow those out to see, too. I'll end up cutting back the Barnevelders, but again, must grow them out first. And I know I'll have extra Cuckoo Marans cockerels, although I'm keeping all the blue ones for sure. All the English Orps stay for growout.

It's amazing how much my thoughts solidify when I come babble them out on here! I would like to get back down below 100 birds by fall. Think I can do it?

I was thinking that the Tractor Supply on Raeford Rd does one every first and third Saturday of the month. So not this weekend but the next there should be one. I will be there with some babies, I have to get rid of some birds myself. If Im wrong I will be the only guy standing there with a cage full of birds in a black explorer.

It is right off the main road, by a church if I remember right. They have sings on the road side. They are a kid friendly place. Been going there for a few years and my youngest is 3, they haven't said anything about an age for the kids. Last year the young lady at the stand where you get your buckets from had some chocolate covered strawberries and let the kids have some.

I'm fairly new to this too. I am also kinda new to NC as well. I lived in NC while in the military and then moved back here 11 years later. I'm not familiar with where Wayne County is. I'm in New Hanover county.

I would like to get two more hens. I wanted to get something different than what I have already, which is RIRs and BAs. Let me know if you could help me out, I can take a few off your hands. I don't think you are too far away from me, plus I enjoy a good drive.

Sorry to be so full of questions today, but I have one more!

My chickens are slacking on the bug eating and we are over run with flies and keep getting bit by mosquitoes?
Is there anything I can use to spray/hurt the yard without hurting the chickens or just have to leave the pests there?

I'm the gimp lady driving the dark red Honda Element, with all the mastiff and Great Dane stickers in the back window. Might just see you there!

. Do you have an idea what you'd like? I can certainly supply Buff Orpingtons, the rose comb brown leghorns, and perhaps an EE or OE, if you want some more color in your eggs. They are still a bit away from laying though, at between three and four months. The other birds are even younger. But there's a bit of choice if you're interested.

. We keep flies under control, with chickens and hoofstock, using both fly traps and fly parasitic wasps. Last summer when everyone was drowning in flies, we had few. I get the wasps (and they are gnat sized and no danger to humans or anything but flies) from Arbico Organics. They call them Fly Predators. I set up for a monthly delivery throughout fly season, with double during peak months. The wasps find the pupae of the flies, lay their eggs in them, and half a dozen baby wasps feed off the fly until they mature and exit. What you get shipped is a bag of fly pupae with wasps ready to emerge. The combination works well for us. Neither is as good alone.
