Good morning everyone! I'm just checking in before I get started. I'm having a cookout today with some friends from school. We are celebrating the end of the semester. I made it through with a 3.5 GPA for the semester, so that means I made the Dean's List again! I guess that good for someone who graduated high school twenty years ago.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Honestly I feel like I can't win! I try so hard to do what's healthiest for my children, best for the Earth, and best for animals.

I was a vegetarian for years and switched back to meat once I had kids. After discovering the horror that is factory farming, I switched my family to vegan "meats". Hot dogs, sausages, chicken nuggets, lunch meat, burgers, etc. all made from organic non- GMO soy based protein. I thought it was the perfect solution!

Now some scientists are saying diets high in soy are bad for little boys and their bodies can misinterpret an enzyme in soy for estrogen and actually begin "feminizing" boys and in worst case scenarios making them sterile!!! They're also saying soy based formula for baby boys is horrible-- when my son was born 7 years ago they were saying it was what's best, so that's what I used and it was EXPENSIVE! So who knows what to believe!

This is now leaving me in need of an organic non soy protein source for my growing children and I am facing the terrifying reality that the only way to achieve this is through raising my own meat chickens. I know for those of you who grew up on a farm this is just a natural process. And this is what I keep telling myself. But honestly, I can't even kill a spider. I watched videos on how to do the process and all I could do was weep. I'm hoping I can stay strong enough to get through the first batch of them. I hear it gets easier each time.....

A special welcome to all the new people!! We hope you feel right at home here!!

It's a happy day, somewhat, for us! A few of my young girls are starting to show interest in laying and I think - THINK we have a few that are just starting up as I have had an occasional 5th egg when our 5th "official" layer is our broody mama who isn't laying...so YAY!! Also, we "accidentally" found a duck nest in a spot that we had checked several times before, but without any luck...yesterday we found 3 eggs!! I don't know HOW they managed to squeeze themselves into the small opening in our well cover, but they did! LOL Now, to find the OTHER nest (unless one is planning to hatch out some ducklings...that would be SO cool!!)...if only it would be that easy!!
Today...today we enter the ranks of mini-van owners potentially. We are going car shopping (eck) with a sick husband, a "sick" (use this term lightly...she just doesn't want to eat anything BUT PB so claims anything that isn't PB makes her sick...ugh) child and one who is teething badly...not to mention a pregnant lady who is really REALLY not in favor of this hot humid weather!! LOL This OUGHT to be fun. You may find me in the psych ward of the local hospital before it's all over with!! LOL. OOhh...even better - the labor/delivery ward - one can only dream!! LOL. Besides, I highly doubt they would let me go 7 weeks early...BOO!!

Speaking of pregnancies..ANY WORD YET LUKE?? We hope to hear that your new baby has arrived happy, healthy and the new mama is doing well.

Have a wonderful day everyone!!
mine all went through the only pb&j, than only hot dogs, and a few other stages. I think its part of life! Mine use to not eat any mushy foods (mashed tators, grits, oatmeal, cream of wheat) but they now eat some of it. I let them try it as they see me eat it, if they like it great if not, oh well, I try later (months or so later) to see if they like it than. Good luck

. You know, eggs themselves are a good protein source. You don't have to make yourself do chicken if you don't want to. And if you do want to try, someone who can do the job may live close to you and be willing to teach you, or even do the job on shares of some kind. You do have options!

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

My company leaves today, and things will get back to normal. Well, my sister leaves. My son surprised me by showing up yesterday! If I had known he was coming, I would have asked him to do some transfers. He lives in Boone.

All the critters are fed and watered. Hubby is mowing the front chicken pasture, so they are locked up for now and mad about it. DS is going to help hubby put my chicken wire on the other pasture fence so the younger birds can come out. Yay! That means I don't have to do all that bending. Love my boys!

Happy Mother's Day to every person who has ever mothered a youngling of any species!

Good Morning and HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all you mom's out there - regardless if your babies have fur, feathers, fins, four legs or two (and anything that might have been missed by my alliteration)!!

All is well here at the Meadows!!

CHICKEN FEED QUESTION: I have a friend who is looking to buy some eggs or raise a few chickens, but because of a severe allergy to certain items has asked me (I guess I am known as the allergy queen or something...LOL). Anyway, she is looking to start up a small backyard flock because of her allergies to: wheat, dairy, corn, soy, barley - she is skeptical about oats because unless they are fully "allergy free" she cannot have any. She would be able to pasture raise a few (she's thinking 3 max) chickens, but was wondering what else to supplement them with if they cannot have any typical feed. Do any of you have any suggestions?? I easily understood how to find soy free alternatives, but aside from ordering a tote of special ground feed, I was a bit at a loss as to how to help her. I know you can mix your own feed, but I do not know enough about nutritional requirements to feel competent enough to even make suggestions. Thank you in advance for any suggestions you might be able to offer!!

Those of you going to WCA - have a GREAT day! To the rest of us...Have a wonderful day as well!

Hey everyone,
I am in Monroe NC and looks like I have a white ameraucana cockerel (about 2months old). As soon as I know for sure, I will update to anyone interested in having him. I also have a beautiful buff chantecler cockerel, as sweet as can be (neighbor issue). He is 5 and a half months old. My 7 year old loves to hold him and kiss his head, he is that sweet! If anyone is interested in either of these boys (if my white ameraucana is in fact a boy), please let me know. Thanks everyone and happy mothers day!
