I've known sweet pits before, too. Maybe as a deterrent, you could get yourself and your "yappers and peckers" (love your terminology!) involved in his training so that he sees everyone as part of his family and under his protection.
I have two pits, one a sweetie and one way too protective. However both understand that the chickens and cats are part of the family. They will chase a bird or squirrel though. Its all part of the training. I think this post is a good idea.
 
Anybody going to the swap at tsc in Asheboro tomorrow?
