Awwww man! Wish I would have known the WCA was so close to home! However, with the rain we got here today, I am guessing it was a wet shin dig!

And we don't need any more chickens :x
WCA is indoors, so a great way to spend a rainy day! And really, since when do we have to "need" chickens to get them? ;)

Plus, it's our social life. We all hang out in the far corner from the door.

I was just looking at this the other day, it's called fowl pox. But it's more these big white warts everywhere, this one looks more like scabs....

CAREFUL of chicken auctions!!!
I learned that the hard way, almost lost my entire flock this week!
Just make sure you have a REALLY GOOD quarantine, not just a seperate pen/coop/feeders in another area of the yard, because that's what I did and ALL my birds ended up sick.
And the ones I brought home looked really healthy, no one had symptoms until after a week of getting here.

Just don't want to see anyone else go through what I did!

Just reinforcing this post. There are a few of us here on this thread that have been through this - despite what we thought were good efforts at quarantining. It doesn't take a sick bird to bring illness to your flock. Sometimes a healthy bird can get sick from the stress of the auction/trip to your home, and then pass on to your birds at home. This is knowledge that ALL backyard bird owners need to know.

Yep. I don't buy at the auction, aside from eggs. I sell, and visit, and wear boot covers!

Good Saturday Morning everyone!!
I've been up since before 4, finally forced myself out of bed by 4 knowing I wasn't going to get any more sleep done...so I have been holed away in my HOT sewing room working on a little dress for my wee one who isn't so wee anymore (lol...she's bigger than my 1st)!! I'm too cheap to turn the AC on up here AND downstairs when we are hardly up here.
Found out July-August our home is going to be a revolving door. The in-laws are coming, my family is coming (well mom will be here to watch the girls for baby #3's arrival...unless she's early

). My sister is coming with her brood (11 yo boy, 9 & 8 yo girls) for her birthday and THAT ought to be interesting. They live on a working farm (they have sheep, pigs, rabbits, and farm 35 acres) BUT...the kids do absolutely NO work on the farm. They are use to watching lots of TV and playing tons of video games.

BOY are they in for a shock when they come here and we have NO TV, NO video games (hooked up anyway - and it'll STAY that way) and the computers are OFF limits.

Did I mention our house also has a "If you don't work, you don't EAT" policy as well as a "you eat what is put in front of you or go hungry" one?!? Yeah...I bet they will leave here and at least appreciate their mother a WHOLE LOT more. At least it'll be good for something.

Last time they visited, it was LESS than pleasant because there was "nothing to do" here. Ideas to "entertain" these kiddos would be much appreciated. I am hoping to NOT have to drive too far with a newborn (I believe Atlantic Beach is just over an hour away from us...so I'd like to keep the driving distance to no more than that) so suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. I am already planning on taking them to the NC Science Museum/History Museum (haha...educational too) and I am not sure WHERE the zoo is, but I did think that was a possibility.
On the chicken front...no news aside from I have a few new layers popping in and surprising us!! Yesterday we collected 6 eggs - so I am pretty sure we have at least 1 or 2 that are just starting to lay. BOO, no duck eggs....FINDING that nest is on my "to do" list today. I am worried though because we had a opossum visit our deck this morning, so I am sure IF there are any eggs out there, they might have already been raided. We're going hiking through the front woods to look for them (and firewood - must have a job for my nephew to do...cutting firewood is a good workout).

Luke - I hope your GF is doing well and that you've met the new one since I haven't seen you post!! If not...we're all keeping our crossables crossed for the two of you!!

Praying for a quick & smooth delivery!! Let us know when you can!!

The Evil-Me can't wait to hear how your neices/nephews deal with "real life" at your house. I know how busy you are going to be, but I hope we get a report, just for entertainment-sake.

Well Chickenstock was a rather damp event but I was able to sell everything I took except for my blue Isbar cockerel and Norwegian Jaerhon cockerel.....so even with the rain we had a great day!

It was so nice to meet some of the folks from this list, too

My day was made, however, when I was able to leave with a little tolbunt Polish pullet from Cardinal Ridge! What beautiful, healthy looking birds!

I was so upset to see the way some individuals transported their animals. I had no idea people would do such a thing, but in the pouring rain they had soaking wet birds in wire cages in a small flat deck trailer with no covering whatsoever! My husband and I were both just appalled. The poor birds were just pitiful and I know they were cold not to mention the wind from going down the road blowing on them and additional rain hitting them. Fortunately, there was just one that we saw leave like that. I cant imagine that that is legal but who knows.

Lots of birds were getting soaked in the rain with sellers who didn't have shelter. It was sad to see the little babies soaked to the skin and shivering just trapped in those cages. There were even some little bunnies getting soaked with no shelter at all. Of course, the BYC folks that i met had shelter for their birds and you could tell they were well taken care of. Anyway, aside from that, we had a great time. Hopefully, the weather will be better for the Fall Chickenstock. And hopefully, the sellers will plan for whatever the weather is! Its not that hard to listen to or watch a weather report.....? I mean, really?

I was at Jim Isley's ARHA show this weekend, otherwise I would have gone to Chickenstock, but hearing this, I am sort of glad I wasn't there.

I do have 10 SFH babies to sell, and wanted to take them, but I know I'll find someone interested in them.

Since December we have had almost 4 FEET of rain! We are so sick of it and the ticks are awful. Can't wait for these guineas to get big enough to go out and eat them.....

OMG girl, I'm with you on the rain. Can't seem to get away from it. We have our horses on dry lots because we are worried about these green pastures.

Love my guineas......I did get a bad tick bite last weekend.....I just wonder what our life would be like without the guineas. I remember the dog bringing in about 10 ticks a day before we got guineas. Now it's rare that one of us gets one.
