That is just adorable!! I can't wait to have a mother and chicks. I have been hatching using the incubator so I have missed out on this process.I used one of my broody Orphingtons to hatch out some guinea eggs but after one died, I decided I would just take the babies as soon as they hatched. I think that since there were different hatch dates, she didn't get up off the nest to feed and water the babies. I even had water in the nest box with them but apparently, the babies didn't get any. I had found them on a wednesday and by Thursday, one was dead! So, I just took the other 3 that hatched under her. She was a faithful setter, but apparently, she just didn't know how to raise the babies. Is it common for them to be good setters but bad mommas?Angela
babies should have been fine for 2 or 3 days, than the mom would get up and take them out. But some are bad moms

Thanks! I waited a day before I took the other eggs. Once she realized there were no more eggs she left the nest with her babies. Don't worry the other eggs were bad so they needed to go anyways. This is her very first hatch and 2 babies later she is one happy hen! No one chicken is the same, maybe she smothered it. You never know...chicks are so vulnerable the first few hours.

I just noticed that someone posted a review of chicken breeds - and they happened to review Leghorns. One of the things stated was that they are 'bad in the pecking order' -- what does that mean? Are they going to be mean to my other chicks? I have been letting my little SLW girls free range around the coop/run area - and they always stay nearby. Hopefully this will help when I do introduce them. However - I am really hoping there is no drama. Still a few more weeks until I will introduce them fully because the Leghorns are growing so much bigger, faster - and the SLW are about 4 weeks behind.

Anyone else have Leghorns around here?

I have 2 hens. They get along fine with everyone. And I will say this...they are a small bird but lay an EXTRA large egg and barely skip a day.
