Hi Im in Wilmington...a chicken addict. 11 eggs in the incubator, 5 in a my brooder in the bathroom, 6 hens, 1 rooster in one coop, 2 hens and 2 roosters in another(they are not fighting YET..making arrangements for them) And I just started in March...
Welcome neighbor, I'm in Castle Hayne!

Always great to hear about someone close by!

OK, so what do you do if you want to go away for a weekend? A week? Two weeks? We live in Raleigh, have a tractor coop, and move the girls every day to give them fresh grass and bugs to peck at. Where do we find a good pet-sitter for our girls? And what about the eggs that the girls lay while they are being watched? When we travel, we can't bring our chickens with us like we bring our dogs (and our four human kids) ... Tips, please :)

I am hoping someone can help me. I have two unexpected roos from my purchase of pullets from Murray McMurray back in the late winter.

He has shown no signs of aggression, except trying to show his manly ways to a couple of cornish cross that I still have. He is a beautiful red color. I only have 7 hens so I do not think I can keep both boys. I am going to try to to make it with one rooster but may be seeing him off too if it does not work out.

If anyone can take him off my hands I would greatly appreciate it.

Good morning folks

it seems we are racing towards summer and the days
of heat.......when I was young it didn't seem to bother me
but with being older I find it is different now......hope
it's not as hot this year as it was last year

Should I treat the whole flock with an antibiotic or use the wait and see approach.

She was fine Monday. I changed from shaving to sand on Sunday and she was perfectly fine, mad at me but fine.

Could she have been egg bound?

Good Wednesday Morning everyone...boy this week seems to be going by fast! I hope everyone is enjoying their cool start to what is scheduled to be a HOT day!!

So I started letting the ducks out a bit later in the day (around 11:00) after their breakfast and until we can figure something out, we've been keeping the chickens locked up...anyway, I found...TWO TWO out of 3 duck eggs in the coop yesterday!!

I have been giving them to a lady from church who is feeding her daughter a special diet to help with her bottle rot teeth issues and was worried I wouldn't be able to give her anymore...what a wonderful blessing. It seems if I lock them up by 5pm and let them out between 10-11, I get at least 2 eggs in the coop!! I suppose that is UNTIL they get wise to me and start "holding it" until I let them out...LOL Did I mention that my DH cannot eat duck eggs? LOL, apparently his "system" does NOT process them and he is left with terrible cramps, and various other stomach issues.

I think we are going to have to put up a fence to keep the chickens from going into the neighbor's crop field and I'm not quite sure what to do to keep them homebound until then. For 2 years, we have not had one chicken stray (ducks were another story) and the other day, they were 1/4 of a mile up the road...IN the road! I'm glad our road is virtually unused because at the speed in which the farmers drive down it...they would have been road kill for sure!

Rotten chickens!! OOhh...mama and her babies are doing well...the babies are starting to get their individual coloring in and boy are they CUTE!! Mama is doing a great job with them...I hope she goes broody again (not this year of course) because she is REALLY a good mama. I did have a hawk fly overhead and even though we were outside and the babies are safe in their covered area...she called them into the mini-coop and gathered them beneath her!!

Love watching moments like that!! The hawks have been doing a wonderful job of keeping the mice and snakes out of the area since they burnt the field across from us (usually we get an influx) and then started planting...something. LOL

So sorry for your loss. I'm praying someone on here knows how to help you...I wish I did, but I have no experience in that area and worse...no knowledge! Hang in there!!

Have a great day everyone!
