First Hatch of 2013 is done.

Eggs from JodiLynn:
15 eggs into the bator(6 faverolles, 9 polish). 3 never started/infertile(2 favs and 1 pol). That gives a fertility/viability rate of 80% overall.

From the remaining 12 eggs(4 favs, 8 pols) "Big Mama" has 10 chicks(4 favs, 6 pols), so 83.3% hatch rate overall.

Eggs from **********:
6 Marans Eggs into the bator. Unable to candle to check for viability/fertility. 1 chick out to "Big Mama".

This is "Big Mama's" first time as a mother. She was 1 of 5 that have the name "newbies". She got renamed this morning. She very easily accepted all the chicks. I moved her to a broody house this morning. I will set her out this evening for 10-15 minutes to go poop or whatever. Same tomorrow. Wednesday should be babies' first day out with mama.

I am letting the marans eggs run another 24 hours before I open them through the aircell, but I know nothing else is going to hatch. That is one thing I really like about my Suro 20. The temps are so even through out the bator the hatch is consistent. Once the first chick hatches the last to hatch is 24-30 hours later or less.

Seems like when it rains it pours. I now have worms. I found speggetti looking worms in a pile with poop in my 2yr. olds EE pen. First I ever seen

. I did some research on here and Valbazen is favored. I have some DE I can use until I can get something. Any other suggestions and what kind of worms are these and how do they get them?

DE is not a wormer..no matter what anyone says.
They are round worms....quite common...unfortunately.

Valbazan is good. Treat..retreat in 10 days and toss eggs for 24 days. (14 day withdrawal after each dose.)
Other option is Wazine for the round worms...but then you still need to retreat with another wormer to treat for other types of worms. ( Wazine only covers round worms) You might as well spend the money on the Valbazan.

Thank you all for the broody duck advice...I'm still not sure IF she is even broody or not. She has built a nice "fluffy" nest in the nesting box, but I have seen her out and about most of today (well at least since I have been home and they have been let out). I know she's been "sitting" in there at night, so if nothing else, I will mark the eggs tonight and in 35 days or so have the Hubs remove them VERY carefully if she has decided not to hatch them. I don't want to lock her up if she's not committed to hatching and she is still a young duck, so maybe she's just experimenting?? I don't know. I will be sure that I tell the boss man to build a ramp in and out of the pool, just in case!! We're still deciding if we want to bury the kiddie pool in the ground and purchase a pump/filter to clean the pool out, or continue with what we are doing. I vote for a partially submerged pool (I don't want it TOO easy for the kiddos to fall into it, if I turn my back for a moment) with a fully functioning pump/filter!! LOL. It'll give DH something to tinker around with in his workshop and build...maybe we will aim for having a system set up for next summer?!?
For those of you with kids...any suggestions on keeping chickens/ducks OFF a play ground set? We purchased one for our girls for their birthday/Christmas and it will be delivered sometime this weekend, but I am curious about keeping the birds off of it, or at least not pooping on it (thus a need for them to keep off...LOL). I'm not opposed to hosing it off before each use, but it would be nice to know if there is a way to keep them off or at least discourage them - without having to put a fence up!! LOL.

Hope everyone managed to stay dry...I'm ready to start building a boat and use it as my method of transportation around here!!
Have a great evening!

Beth is so wise!

DE is not a wormer. Modern Folklore has it chopping up worms in the gut of a bird, goat, horse, dog, human...whatever. If this were true, just think what it would be doing to the more tender stomach and intestinal lining of the actual animal!

Let me know when you are going and I'll show up too so there
will be at least one you know

That would be awesome!!! AND very sweet! Thanks

Not really that Big, just that packed. They really could use more space. Still, there were 400 or so lots that went yesterday, and that's nothing to sneeze at.
OMG... Yeah, I would be intimidated, overwhelmed, I am not even sure what else... for sure....

Congrats on your hatch! Sorry about the Marans eggs... I have heard they are hard to hatch, is that most folks experience on here?

Valbazen is what I used after tons of research.. 2StrayRoos too bad your aren't closer, you could have some of mine. The stuff is packaged for cows and I think I have enough for a lifetime!

On the topic of worms... I have been meaning to ask how often do you all recommend worming for the sandhills area? Also, what time of year? At what age do you start worming young chickens? I only found out last year that I should have been worming... now I am trying to get on a schedule and do it right. Then figure out what else I am not doing!
