North Carolina

Was reading in today's paper that Troutman passed an ordinance in June allowing people to keep chickens within the town limits. Only 4 hens allowed for each single family lot. Sounds kind of stupid but the also say that they must be kept in secure enclosure during night. To me that sounds like common sense. Also must be either in coop or enclosed/fenced yard during daylight hours and coop must be cleaned regularly to prevent offensive odors. I guess that if it wasn't spelled out like they have it people would just let them run the neighborhoods. Glad that another town has allowed chickens.

Don't know why this double posted. Sorry

Good Morning Everyone!

I had a few moments of worry on my way to work this morning. When I was letting one of the coops of younger chicks out I noticed pinkish/reddish discharge in the poo. That immediately got me worried about cocci. One of my references is this poo chart: http://pluckandfeather.com/chicken-poo-chart-graphic.html I think this is really helpful and it put my mind to rest as it appears the little guys are just shedding intestional lining. Since this is from an individuals blog and not an "official", e.g. veternary source I would be curious to know what some of the more experienced folks on here think. Do you agree that the pictures are pretty accurate?

Not sure if I have said it on this thread, but I am really thankful for the BYC community! I have learned so much from you all and really appreciate the knowledge you all so willingly share!

Tammy, I think they did a great job on the chicken poo chart! I've seen others as well....the chickenchick has one....but that one looks quite thorough. I bookmarked it, as it's one I didn't have. Thanks!

Good morning folks

Inspecting poo on a daily basis can warn you of problems even before a chicken appears sick. Someone needs to make a poo chart poster to hang in the coop.

I also think someone needs to write "SOP for Dummies". I've been trying to read the CSU thread and some of that stuff is WWAAAYYY over my head.

Have a happy Wedensday! We're half way through the work week!

It can be that way on CSU, specially if you don't have that breed. But you can ask questions and more than likely someone can help you. There's alot to learn from that thread.

Turkey Raising Question:

Everything I saw online said the broadbreasted turkeys should be on a 28% protein starter feed right now. I went to Lake Rim feed & they had a small bag, which is just about gone. I went back this morning to get more and they don't have any, they said they got it in by accident.
I went to TSC and they have a quail, turkey, chakar feed, but it's only 20% protein.
Is that okay? Do I somehow need to add protein (they won't eat table food)?
Also, what about the chickens I have in there for meat, can they all share?
I've heard of people using high protein on all their chicks then at about 10 weeks pulling out the females in a separate pen and putting them on regular feed and keeping the meat birds and roosters on high protein until they are processed.

Thanks!

WOW!! You all talked a LOT the past few days while I was gone!! LOL...I haven't gone back to read and catch up, so please forgive me. Nap time only lasts SO long and I thought I would pop in and say HI!! I've missed you all!! Baby Girl #3 was born LATE on Thursday evening (11pm) after a very long stagnant labor. I was forced into an induction (I had been waterless for 18 hours and they feared infection from me being at the hospital for hours already) at 7pm (ish) and a few blurry hours later...we welcomed baby girl #3!! I will also say...as we were doing our many laps around the hospital trying to get labor going...DH asks me (I KID YOU NOT), "So...how long after this one do we want to wait until we start trying for the next one?"

I am thinking he's desperately hoping the NEXT ONE will be a boy...LOL

On a chicken note: we should have 12 new additions this weekend (if ALL eggs hatch) - they will be mutts, I honestly don't know WHAT my hubby stuck under them...but it's cute to watch the two broodies switch nests back and forth! Sometime in a few more weeks, we should (if all goes well) have some duck eggs hatching as well!!

You jinxed me...yeah, that's it!! HEHE

Because I know I missed stuff: WELCOME to all the new people...CONGRATULATIONS to those of you who had successful hatches and/or incubations!! I will hope that no one experienced any losses, so I won't even comment on that. So...for now...have a GREAT DAY everyone!!
