Hope everyone is doing well.  Just skipped to the end because I have a question and I know there are some experts on here so...  Im looking to buy some Silkies.  I found someone who has them but they are Bantam Silkies.  I did a little research and it seems American Silkies are referred too as Bantams (about 18 ounces)?  European Silkies are more full sized Silkies at about 3lbs.  With some cross breeding you can get close to a full sized Silkie but you cant really buy them here in the states. (Disclaimer-Im sure for the right money and right connections, you can always find anything you want.  Im not talking in definites just generalities)  Just making sure I was informed right before I order bantams.

ALL silkies in the US are bantams. There is no lf option here.

I have lots of bantam and Spitzhauben eggs hatching now but was wondering if any of you are near Fayetteville 30+ miles or so that might have hatching eggs or chicks available. Looking RIR, barred rock, Delaware and or orpington. I have a tree & shrub nursery and swap plants too!

Oh..

Put eggs in water with salt bring to a boil for 5 minutes..
Remove heat...rinse with cold water then cover with ice water for 5 or more minutes.

Works for me!

Hi!

I'm not far from you.
I live in Fayetteville, right over the Hoke County line.
Any chance you have kids in 4H? My son wants to join really bad, and I think Raeford is closer.

Hi!
I don't have any hatching eggs, I buy mine online usually, but I have a Appenzeller Spitzhauben (I'm assuming we're talking about the same bird). I love it! Came a couple weeks ago as hatcher's choice rare chick, and she's SO sweet!

Just paid for my order of Blue Isbars and show quality Blue Copper Marans.
Fingers crossed for a good hatch, these eggs weren't cheap!!!!
Should be here Tuesday or Wednesday-- just in time to reload the incubator :)

I had to order them on ebay for lack of options, but they are from the Greenfire line, which all the ones I have seen are from.
The person is NPIP and has really high feedback, so hopefully it works.
I've had really good luck with buying hatching eggs on there in the past.
Ended up going for $41 with shipping for 6.
But I've been watching for a week or so and that's about the going rate. I had bid $65 for 12+ and got outbid at the last second without realizing it.
I want to get them both in the incubator the same day.
I'm also looking at cream legbars, they seem to be selling for the same rate too.
I don't know anyone local selling either.

If anyone's looking I will have some chicks for sale if I have a good hatch :)
I only want to keep 1 female (though with my luck it will be all roos!)

Side note: Those Ayam Cemani eggs I was pining for earlier in the week finally sold on ebay-- $1200 for 6!!!!

This is from the Silver-laced Wyandotte page here on BYC. Has the same birchen color pattern. Easier to pluck.

Okay, so this is just NOT the year for us. LOL. I have ANOTHER broody but NO fertile eggs as we currently don't have a rooster (well, we have a younger rooster, but he's not doing his "job" and well...we don't plan on keeping him around much longer - thus our search for a good SOLID rooster).

Mama hen is still sitting on the few duck eggs that survived the attack, 6 in total. They should hatch sometime next week - just in time for my MIL & SIL to be here. That is also when we plan to process the youngster roo - as my MIL/SIL have never seen how a farm works, and we offered them a TRUE chicken dinner to which they said sure. Little do they know that DH wants them to partake in the WHOLE process. Not sure how well THAT is going to go!! Had to do some emergency "surgery" last night on 2 of our hens. Somehow they ended up getting some wire wrapped around one of their legs and while I held, DH cut the wire off. We cleaned the wound, sprayed it down with the blue stuff and they were off and running with only a tiny bit of a limp - much better than the limp they had which caught my eye yesterday morning! Fortunately we caught it in time and the leg was only slightly swollen!! I can't imagine, if we weren't checking our birds weekly, how bad it could have gotten. Still, we're NOT sure HOW they got into the wire or HOW it ended up wrapped around their leg. Is there anything I should be on the look out for with regards to the wound care?
Ack, I cannot believe it's been 3 weeks since our new baby arrived. Is it me, or has this "summer" FLOWN by (of course I am speaking of the time postpartum...we all know how SLOW I thought life was going when I was about to burst. LOL)?!? I'm afraid for a harsh winter - if that's the case...I'd better start stacking our wood pile up!!
Have a great weekend everyone!!

I've gotten eggs from Ebay several times and have had really great hatch rates. However, the Rhodebar eggs that I got ended up being questionable....My rooster had the wrong kind of comb for a Rhodebar so I have no idea if he was a pure rhodebar. I guess you just never know if one of their other breeds of roosters may have gotten in with the hens when you buy them off Ebay.....? My other chickens seem to be pure breeds. Also, you may not know if they are pure breeds until they start laying and you see the color of the eggs. I know its a bummer but if you don't mind them not being 100%, it is no big deal. I just enjoy the pretty hens and the pretty eggs and am not really interested in selling chicks as a business. If I decide to order eggs again, I will probably find someone on BYC who raises them and get eggs from them. I did that with my Norwegian Jaerhons and Ameraucanas and they are definitely pure breeds and laying beautiful, correct eggs :)

On those black chickens.....I saw them on Facebook a while back and folks had made comments on the prices of them! Unreal! I can't imagine that those poor things would do well in this NC heat and humidity.....my english orphingtons really seem to suffer in the heat...I keep fans going and its very shady around their coop and our house but they like to go beside the openings in the brick under the house when it is super hot because cool air comes out from under there.
