There is no way on earth any of my girls would allow that. Why is she cold? Did she get wet or something?

She was on the floor next to the waterer. There was a wet spot from the rain. No idea why she was nor on the roost.

Ugh! Found a snake in coop yesterday and think I have another trying to get in! This one was smaller a 3-4 foot black snake. He was in my storage room. Not sure if he got into the main coop or not! What do you all do to keep your coop snake free? My small children (2 and 4 year olds) like to go in and help collect eggs and feed chickens so I do not want to exclude them but right now I am a little worried they will happen on a snake. Ah the blissful days of going into the coop and not being worried about a snake.. booo!

My aunt had a large black snake that came back on multiple occasions and ate several of her baby peacocks if I remember correctly. At one point, it got in to her enclosure through the holes and then it was too big to get out after eating a peacock. We re-located the snake that was causing problems and she installed hardware cloth around the bottom part of her run area. Hope this helps. Good luck. I hope you get it resolved before you lose any of your chickens!

I haven't been on in quite some time. It's been very busy here lately, just no time for computers. I hope everyone is doing well. I have absolutely no time to read through almost 2000 posts, so I'm not going to try.

I have a question: We had a raccoon terrorize our two coops this past weekend. It killed two ducks, two chickens and maimed another duck. I have her in a quarantine coop, and am keeping the wounds as clean as I can (her right eye is either gone, or permanently blinded, damage to the top of her head, and her left eye area is also damaged, but she can see out of it), my question is, how long should I quarantine her for to watch for rabies? Also, does anyone know what I should look for concerning rabies during the quarantine period? BTW: the raccoon will no longer be bothering our chickens or ducks.

I just catch them as I can and relocate them. Unless you hardware cloth the whole pen and leave no gaps anywhere, you wont stop them. I mostly find rat snakes that are after the mice which are after the chicken feed. I have lost a few eggs and chicks to some over the years, but for the most part the snakes aren't too much of a problem. This year I was lucky enough to catch two orange corn snakes, which of course got relocated to the woods.

Birds don't get rabies. But you need to keep her by herself to make sure she heals well and doesn't end up with an infection. More than likely her eye will end up filling up with a pussy or cottage cheese looking stuff. You need to wipe her eye a few times a day to keep it cleaned. You don't want an infection in the eye socket if you can avoid it. If she ends up with a hardish whitish/ cream lump in her eye, you need to work it out of the eye socket. This will be uncomfortable for her, as it might require some pushing and all to get it out. If you find this and need more information on how, feel free to ask. I'll help the best I can.

Thank you for clarifying that! I wasn't sure, but then my dad brought up the possibility of rabies, so I figured it's better to ask, than to assume otherwise and end up wrong. I've been cleaning her eyes with Witch Hazel, which has antibacterial properties, to help cut down on infection. She's just a baby really, only about 3 months old or so, the only surviving duckling that one of my (now dead) ducks hatched out a few months ago, so I'm kind of attached to her. :/ I hope she pulls through.

I'd give her a dosage of Tylan or Duramycin or Fishmox with multiple wounds, especially with head and eye wounds. better to be safe than sorry. I'd also be cleaning it with something that has antispetic something like peroxide or bedadine
