A victim of chicken math today! My friend who got me into chickens is on her way to get 4 lavendar orpingtons of which 2 are now mine!

I only want to keep 1 and they are said to be pullets. If anyone in my area is interested in buying one let me know. I am only asking what I am paying for it. $10.

Hope everyone is enjoying their holiday weekend!

Sure :)
I don't sell the meat birds, but I ordered them through freedom rangers in PA. I really would love to breed chickens and whatnot, but no roosters for me since we're in the city limits. I think the zoning is technically 10 chickens (but meat birds don't count right???

I spent forever googling feed trying to find something GMO free and finally came across this recipe. I'll put it on here in case anyone else is interested, but I'll PM it to you. You can play around with it a little, but it's a good starting place (the best I've found anyway). Her birds look super healthy and pretty too, it's doing wonders for their feathers. She also noted that her chickens eat less because it's more filling than the pellets or crumble you buy.

Garden Betty’s Homemade Whole Grain Chicken Feed
Makes 8 1/2 pounds (fills 10-pound feeder)
4 cups oat groats
4 cups black oil sunflower seeds
4 cups hard red wheat berries
2 cups soft white wheat berries
2 cups kamut
2 cups millet
2 cups whole corn
1 cup lentils
1 cup sesame seeds
1 cup flax seeds
1/2 cup brewer’s yeast
1/4 cup kelp granules
free-choice oyster shells
free-choice grit

Here is the link to her blog page about it as well with photos. I found it pretty helpful. It's where I got the idea that I actually could make my own! http://www.gardenbetty.com/2012/06/garden-bettys-homemade-whole-grain-chicken-feed/

DST, I would recommend you sell live chickens for eating purposes. Once you get into the "we kill and sell the meat" section, you have to meet all kinds of regulations and all. Which is why most just sell ready to eat birds that are still walking around the yard. Most of the "meat birds" that grow quick and big do not breed true. So you can't take a cornish rock meatie hen and breed her to a cornish rock meatie rooster and get chicks that grow like the parents. Most "meat" birds are hard pressed to live a year, but some do. One reason the freedom rangers have a market, they don't have all the health problems the other meaties do. But I don't know if they breed true or not. You might be best off getting a dual purpose breed and selling off the extra males that are around a year old or older for meat purposes, and you can sell the eggs from the hens, or chicks. Dual purpose breeds take longer to reach full size, and you would want to get good quality birds, as they get bigger than the hatchery ones. You will not make money either way, you'll just off set the feed cost a little bit.
