DTS mille fleur is just a color, and comes on many breeds. So they are just a different color than your other bantam cochins. Standard Of Perfection=SOP its a really good book and tells you what the breeds (the ones recognized by the American Poultry ***. and thus showable) should look like. Ex. your campines should have white earlobes and lead colored legs (the reasons I wonder if they are pure or not). I don't mean you have to breed show birds, but when I look to buy a bird of a certain breed or color type, I want it to at least have the breeds/color characteristics right.

I figured out the whole Mille Fleur color tng, because my mom had me look them up and she's fallen in love with th color and wants them. He has two breeding pairs he'll sell us and she really wants the. THEY ARE SO PRETTY!

I'm going to loo into the SOP. Would breeding "show quality" birds be able to most likely bring in more money/bring in more customers? Like maybe if our Campiness and the Mille Fleurs fit the bill we could breed them and sell chicks as well as a few dual purpose breeds. Thank you for all the help and RF!!!

You would have to show the breeding stock at a few shows and do very well to prove they are show birds. One win at a county or state fair doesn't make them show birds. The few people I know, who show like what you are thinking about, don't make money. They can get more for their eggs/ birds, but they have to keep the better birds for themselves for showing/ breeding. And you can't sell show quality eggs or chicks. I always get a kick outta someone asking if everyone thinks their chicks are show quality because they bought show quality eggs or chicks. Buying from show quality parents just improves the chances of the offspring being show quality.

But if you have breeding stock that has the breeds characteristics it helps alot. Most people I know wouldn't buy a cochin that doesn't have feathered shanks or has a pea comb. People will be willing to come back to buy more birds from you if they are what you say they are. There's always people that get mad when they find out that their ameraucana is not an ameraucana but rather a easter egger.

I suggest just doing what you are doing right now, selling your extra eggs. During this time you can get your setup the way you want it and see what breeds you like. Go to flock swaps or chicken sales in your area and see what is selling for what. After awhile you should have a better handle on things and you can go from there on what you might want to do.

Next order of business, *business*.
I want to do something, if only small for now, to earn a little money with our chickens. We currently have 3 Silver Laced Wyndotte Pullets, 2 Welsummer pullets, 2 RIRs, 3 buff orpingtons, 3 Black Australorps, 2 cuckoo maran chicks (most likely 1 pullet, and 1 cockerel, 1 splash orpington, 1 dark brahma, 1 Japanese Bantam rooster, a buff cochin bantam pair, and a golden campine bantam pair. When I look at it, its quite a variety. However, I really think we should cut back to a select few breeds

Dark Brahma you say?? IF you decide to downsize to a few select breeds and your Brahma isn't one of them I may take her in for you. :) Possibly your Orpingtons too. We're planning on getting some of those come spring anyway.

DST.......the ONLY way I know of to make a small
fortune with chickens is to start with large one.

I hope you do make money. I would suggest you go with
popular breeds and good quality breeding stock of those breeds.
Build a customer base for hatching eggs and chicks and research
prices in your area. Good luck
