FINALLY!!!!! After nearly 9 months without fresh eggs, Merry Christmas to meeeeeeeee!!!! :weee It's really dark, I don't know why the flash on my camera is making it look a lighter brown. I was in the kitchen shucking oysters and I hear one of my girls squawking like crazy and run outside thinking one was about to give me a Christmas present! Sure enough my Marans was squatting down working hard and a minute or so later out rolled this beauty! Hopefully my Lav Orps start soon!
Hooray! Squee!

Merry Christmas

Hope it's a grand one for you and your loved ones

Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Here's my favorite gift, DH knows me well!

PS- Anyone know about HEAT/AC??? Can't get in touch with anyone being Christmas and it's 48 degrees in our house! We just replaced the whole unit & thermostat 16 months ago. Thermostat is saying heat is on, but it's not. Fan & A/C won't come on either. Tried resetting the breaker, double checked the wires, we're freezing! I know this isn't chicken-related, but a lot of you seem to be very DIY savvy, so any advice would be appreciated!

Hey BYCers! Merry Christmas!!!! Hope you are all having a great Christmas and have a wonderful time with your families!!! Quick question on lights....? My mom is really ticked we aren't getting too many now in the winter since the days are shorter.. We are getting one maybe two a day.... But we are spending quite a lot on food lately and aren't getting nearly enough eggs to sell... and we really would like to get the money to pay more towards the food.... I've read about artificial lighting... the positives and negatives. Do any of you guys use artificial light in your coops? IF we do use light I think I would go with something I read somewhere. It was talking about how you do need to give your girls a break to keep their systems going (Completely agree, don't want to stress them out), but still getting eggs in the winer.

They suggested using light in the winter but not until after they molt in the fall. The molting would give them some time to recuperate and molt out before it gets too cold and once they all molt... vwala they have all their feathers have had a break and will start laying again.

I have read that you need to turn that light on in the morning so they will not be disorientated at night....

Was just wondering what your guys' perspective was?.. and I hope you all have an amazing christmas and cherish this time with your families.... I know I am! We are trying to make the most of this Christmas because it will most likely be my uncles last, because he has been diagnosed with stage four lung cancer and has several tumors spread throughout his body, several residing in his brain... Anyways I hope you all have a very merry christmas.

sorry about your uncle.....hope he does not have a lot of pain.

We don't use lights in the coops.....we let the hens rest and just
go with what eggs we are getting. I really don't think we ever
recover the feed costs.....just lessen it a bit is all.....at least for us.

hubby says that it sounds like a bad thermostat. He says that he would take the thermostat off of the wall and disconnect it and then reconnect it, making sure that everything is connected correctly
