May wanna look into silkies! Although not outstanding layers. They are bantam little fluffy butts that will hatch eggs! They have a strong broody nature and are loving and affectionate. Mine meet me at the door and beg to be held!look at my profile pic to see some young white silkies.

For those of you that have Marans, when do they generally start laying? I have 2 Marans pullets that are about 17 weeks old, so I am hoping for eggs maybe at the end of Feb or early March.... Is this a possibility or just wishful thinking?

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!

WE GOT OUR FIRST EGGS!!!!! I needed this soooooo bad! Thank's L'Eggo!

Apparently she's been hiding them or something.

I swear I checked yesterday and there wasn't any and tonight there were two in two separate nesting boxes. Only one of my girls lays green eggs. Actually, only one of my girls lays eggs at all. :D

Totally needed this since we just came back from a very depressing visit to our Molly at the vets. Bright side she gets to come home tomorrow and there's a chance she'll recover the use of her legs in time with treatment. Spinal cord surgery will cost us over 4 grand and we just don't have that. Prayers for her please.

I had a cat some years ago that was hit by a car and lived but suffered
a spinal cord injury/swelling. The vet was not hopeful on a recovery but
sent the cat home with meds for the swelling. I asked about applying
liquid DMSO. He said they had not used it on cats but it wouldn't hurt to
try so I did. I put it on his back several times a day for a couple weeks.
Long story short......the cat walked again although not well.....he was bit
wobbly sometimes. Don't give up hope as you just may find the meds
may help.

OMG LOVE HEARING ABOUT FIRST EGGS :D
and as someone who works at a vets office i can tell you from multiple first hand experiences that our pets are a lot stronger and more resilient than any of us truly give them credit for and remember LOT OF LOVE AND KIND WORDS CAN GO A LONG WAY WITH A PET :)

Can't believe the cheeky bird was hiding them from me! Glad she fessed up though. Just weighed them - only 1.5oz each and 4cm long. So excited to finally be getting eggs!

Thanks! She definitely perked up while we were there, so I imagine having her home will help. She's a very devoted dog - always was. Any advice on a doggie wheelchair? I'm told I'll need one for at least the next several months.

erm.... what is DMSO? I'm a bit of an eejit in this department. Wheelchair shopping for my dog is depressing. Told my hubs he needed to help me out with it - his response... "I am helping! I'm going to get the bottle of wine!"

Sanford is not too far. I would love some lavender birds for my flock.
I will PM you.

Well, both wee boys are doing great this morning! Full of energy and back to asking for food/drink and hugs/kisses CONSTANTLY! Happy mommy! Even managed to convince them to do most of their chores this morning. Leaving in half an hour to go pick up hubs from the airport.

Looking forward to my spring order of chicks next month. So far planning on a couple Polish, some Speckled Sussex, a pair or so of Delawares to replace the two I lost, and then some ???? I'm open to suggestions. Only real requirement is that they get along with me and the kids as well as each other, preferrably forage well and lay at least 2-3 eggs a week or more. Pretty helps too. :)
So glad the boys are better and your hubby is home! Soooo many chickens so little time.... I have had a bunch of breeds. For eggs I love my leghorns, and EE's, Buff Orps are great as are Barred Rocks and Rhode Island Reds...too many to choose from!

YAY on the eggs!!! Sorry about Molly, but as CSB said you never know. Sending good thoughts your way.

I promised yesterday that I would post pics of the new babies. Here is one.

I also got a first egg yesterday! Check out this purple/pink one. Along with it are a Leghorn egg which is huge, a couple of green eggs, a welsummer egg and a regular brown egg.

Lastly, this is the Super Blue Egg Layers baby daddy LOL... He is a Splash Blue Wheaten Ameraucana. Poor guy needs a name... I haven't come up with one.

Have a great evening!
