Yesterday was so nice that I got into my coop, cleaned the poop board,....got the sand raked clean and was going to try to get some new sand today but then here came the rain!

Oh well, we are supposed to NOT rain one day this week...I may borrow my hubby's truck and go get it then... But sure felt better giving the coop a fresh cleaning. Thinking about making for nesting box curtains...got a new sewing machine at Christmas....need to get some material....I saw some chicken fabric a couple of weeks ago... Hope all of you are having a good chicken week so far... take care

This 70 degree weather so makes me want to be out in the garden!!!

Has anyone started their seedlings inside yet?
I'm thinking about putting in the onions & garlic, though with my luck we'll end up with another freak ice storm!

So far I've only started some garlic chives and some catnip just for fun. The actual garden planting doesn't start until Mid Feb (week of the 16th). That will be a busy week for seedlings too - I have 18 different varieties going in that week. :D March should be fun too - The bulk of the garden is dealt with then I think. 64 varieties in all going in this year - and that doesn't count the fruits (strawberries, blueberries, grapes, kiwi, raspberries and blackberries) or the orchard (apples, pears, apricots, peaches, plums, cherries...). Will probably try to do a potted orchard as well (Avocados, oranges, lemons, limes, bananas etc.). Doubt I'll see anything out of those though. In the words of Scarlett O'Hara..... "As God is my witness, I'll never be hungry again!"

Who wants to help me can this year? :D

Oh, and Leggo has officially laid her first dozen eggs. So far she's averaging 5 a week. Not off to a bad start that one.

Dunno about most - but all mine so far have been normal. I only have the one chicken as my frame of reference though. I did get at least one double yolk (I suspect another one is, but haven't cracked it yet) but other than that they're all normal size, shape, color, texture etc. They get a tiny bit bigger every day (couple grams here, gram or two there).

Here's hoping the normalcy keeps up for both of us!

How long does it normally take for new layers to get into a rhythm?

Where are you getting your sand? We haven't been here long enough for me to find everything. Do they sell anything else?

I came home to 3 chicks. I was sad to miss the hatching. She's still sitting on a few more eggs, so we'll see. She's a fabulous mama! (I'm so glad not to have to use the heat lamp) And I swear she's grinning at them.

with white stuff. I could live without Mother
Nature having another pillow fight with Old
Man Winter........that left quite a mess last time

Well, I got home yesterday about 1030 am and seen that the young rooster running lose in the yard was covered in mud. Thought what the heck, and went on my way. About 1 pm I went to feed the birds and when I got to the silkie pen I threw the food as always, just this time a mud monster falls out of the nesting box. "What the h*ll" came out of my mouth as I looked around to see who it was. It's the paint silkie rooster

. So I finish feeding everyone and go and get him, as he is staggering around trying to eat. Head to toe is nothing but mud. In his nose and covering his eyes as well. I take him in and rinse him in warm water. Man, I think he managed to get more mud in his feathers than my kids do when they play in the mud. So he got to spend the rest of the day and all night in the house. It takes a while for a silkie to become fluffy again, once fully soaked. He got kicked out this morning at 430 am when he wouldn't stop crowing

. My best guess is the young rooster found the hole in the silkie pen and got in, from there he either kicked butt or got his butt kicked (since he wasn't still in the pen). Guess I really need to get off my rear and fix my pens
