North Carolina

After seeing the mention on here, it sounded familiar...but not real familiar...so I looked them up. I remember checking out the website before. Note that it says at the bottom that all his chicks are vaccinated against Mareks. If you get vaccinated chicks, make sure ALL your birds from all sources are vaccinated, as the vaccine can make birds carriers. You need to do all or nothing. Don't mix them.

There is a lot of controversy on this but from what I've read a chicken that is vaccinated with the Marek's vaccine CANNOT shed the virus that infects chickens. The vaccine comes from the turkey form of Marek's and it is impossible to catch the chicken version from it.

The only way that a vaccinated chick can become a carrier of Marek's is if that chick is exposed to a chicken that has Marek's or, is a carrier of Marek's. If your flock doesn't have a problem with Marek's, it's okay to mix vaccinated and unvaccinated chicks. The vaccine will not prevent the chick from getting Marek's, or becoming a carrier, it only prevents the formation of the tumors that are associated with the disease.

Hey Y'all, we are in Raeford. Raised chickens in the distant past and looking to start again. Does anyone have any experience with Fayetteville Poultry? Am hoping to pick up some this weekend if all goes well.

Our family is on a few acres and already have a decent set-up for some layers as well as meat birds.

Thanks,
Kent

I have purchased from Fayetteville poultry and He was great. I didn't actually go there because I live on the coast and my parents were driving through the area and picked up for chicks for me. I got to cinnamon queens and do buff orpingtons and have had no problems. I have another friend that is getting some from him this spring. The owner is on this thread or at least he used to be. I can't remember what his screen name is.

I don't know much about it, but I've also heard that you shouldn't mix chicks because it can spread.
My first flock was hatchery so they were all vaccinated.
The one I have now I hatched all but 2, so I didn't get them vaccinated.
I'm super cautious with them, so hopefully they are never exposed, but you know how things can travel.
Personally, I don't know anyone with unvaccinated chickens that got Mareks (Not saying its uncommon, I have no idea, I just don't know anyone who dealt with it).
I *believe* most the people on here who hatch out their own chicks don't bother with vaccinations.

Boy, I'm pooped! After a long night trying to catch dinner, which about cost me my eye, I spent the day doing up some excess birds. Also made the neighbor happy with some bags of chicken manure. I don't know if it's from ram rodding around the trees and underbrush in the dark last night or moving all the bags of manure, but my back is a little sore now. I think my teenager years are catching up to me :/ .

I've read just the opposite...but I think part of it is that there are several vaccines out there. They are each different. But I have not heard of any effective in preventing the disease; they only mitigate it. I choose to breed for resistance. Don't know how that'll work out, but in another decade I might know.

In other news....my NPIP testing is Finally scheduled, for March 6th. I will be a nervous wreck until I'm through that!

Took care of this and wrote them a nice note also. Letting them know that we already knew what kind of character this child had...she had been proving it for a period of time...HOWEVER, we were watching to see what kind of character their town and state had.!! Reminded them that the 4-H programs are actively building morals and character through requiring the member to be involved in service to this community........and this child would never forget the decision they make so make it with great care and consideration. Guess you could say they just piss me off at thought of what they are doing.! LOL

Hello all!

I have been on and off of this thread since it began. I do not come onto BYC to promote myself but to enjoy what all of you have to say. Fayetteville Poultry is a small family business started Feb 2013. We are just starting our second year with it but have been raising our own chickens since 2011. We (my wife, three children and myself) appreciate all of our customers and strive to make them happy. We hope to continue to grow our poultry education and our flocks. I appreciate all of the help I have got here from time to time. Thank you to our customers that said good things about us on the last couple pages!

Jeremy
