Well came in tonight to find one of my hens has been attacked by something..
idk what but I think it might have been our heeler/lab puppy. I thought if u raise the dog with the chickens it wont attack them.. our great dane that passed at age 11 in nov never bothered them at all...how do I break her or even know for sure it was her?... if this cant b stopped I will b rehoming a puppy.

Try a search for guard dogs. There are several threads about this problem on BYC.

it depends on the dog's personality, some are just too instinctive. Neutering them also helps, or training with a shock collar. I have a shetland sheepdog, he ignores the chickens except when my rooster tries to attack him then he tries to bite him

Good morning folks

Another lovely weekend has come and gone.
I managed to get some/a lot done and yet it seems
I hardly made a dent in that pile of things to do.
We are figuring out what some of the pullets are
laying as far as color with the olive eggers. Should
know soon who gets to stay and who is looking for
a new home

hope everyone has a good day

Good morning! Busy weekend for me, but not at home so no work done there!

Greenchickenman, just to be clear...I wasn't speaking negatively about your chicks. Just speaking about the Mareks vaccine. Some choose it; some don't. When I order from a hatchery, I make sure to choose unvaccinated. You may want to consider having the choice like the big hatcheries do. And good luck to you as you move into your second year.

On Marek's, I vaccinate higher value chicks(at hatchery), especially if I order from a hatchery that has to ship the chicks. But there's no way if knowing if the feed store chicks or other chicks I buy are vaccinated and I don't worry because I run a turkey hen with my chickens. I researched that the exposure to turkeys would grant a chicken the same safe immunity that the vaccine does. I also feel that since it merely prevents cancerous tumors and that immunized birds may still contract Marek's that it is a bit of a moot point since if I were to get Marek's, my flock would become totally closed and I would let them just die out which could take so long.
So I just hope for the best either way :)

Hope everyone has a good morning! I woke up in the middle of a dream this morning so I feel pretty dead. *coffee*

My attacked hen made it thru the night...she may just pull thru this. Im adding a little antibiotic to her water to prevent infection in then wound on her neck..I wish I knew a way to dress it ..the skin is torn but the internal seems in tact. How she seems this evening will deterime if we nurse her or cull her so that she doesnt suffer. Idk if either of us can kill this chicken. I may call the vet

Starlingdaly-- TSC chicks aren't vaccinated, just FYI, not sure which feed store you buy from. I asked when I bought them a couple years ago because the chickens I had at that time were. The ones I have now aren't. I've also heard on a few threads that you shouldn't keep turkeys & chickens together because they are both susceptible to different diseases. I may have this reversed, but there was something that didn't really effect chickens but could kill a turkey. I don't know I'd have to look it up again. That said, my 2 turkeys stay with my 13 chickens. I had them separated for awhile, but they kept trying to get together so I let them all free range. The turkeys started putting themselves to bed in the chicken coop instead of their's so I left them. I think they were lonely just the 2 of them when we processed the other turkeys. Knock on wood I haven't had any problems.....

Daphneysmamma-- I'm so sorry you're going through this. Though you'd be surprised what you can do if you have to. I never killed anything, vegan for years,& all my birds got sick while my husband was away. I culled all of them, you just have to remind yourself you're doing what's best for the bird & make it as quick and painless as possible. I am praying for you little hen, hopefully it doesn't come to that. Are you sure it was your dog, not another animal? We had a beagle/lab mix we adopted from the shelter, and he had been fine with the chickens. Then one day out of nowhere he goes and grabs her by the neck, flailing her around and broke it. That was kinda the last straw with the dog & we found him a good forever home on a lot of land over in East Fayetteville. No more dogs for us, my cats are a lot easier.

Loved the weather this weekend! I built a 200sq ft raised veggie bed out front, and tilled the 300 sq ft mini corn field, fencing it in today. Lowe's had the 3ft tall, 50 ft long galvanized steel fencing (my husband calls it goat fencing, it's with the little rectangles, I have it around my animal pens) on clearance for $7.49 per roll!!!! Normally, it's $30. I spent like $250 on it the past 6 months building all these pens. We bought all the rolls they had left so now we're set for any project I may come up with haha. Using it for this cornfield and around a few gardens. Next week I have to build all the raised beds for the back yard. We're going to need like 20 truck loads of soil, but hopefully once it's established we'll be good for years!

Hope everyone's doing good, seems like everyone had a busy weekend!

She should be fine as long as she is eating and drinking. Just keep it cleaned out. I have had worse with my birds and they have made it fine. Might have a spot that wont grow feathers but that's it.
