Yup and while my Ameraucana was advertised as the real deal I am always suspicious with hatchery birds (came from MPC before I got my incubator

I wish she was an OE! If it came from my EE, she is just your standard hatchery EE advertised as an Ameraucana but I knew better lol. The egg color is actually a little lighter than in the pic. If you notice the commercial white leghorn egg is a little dull looking so my lighting wasn't ideal.
I think @bantambury has a frizzle or sizzle she's been wanting to sell. I could be remembering something wrong but it's worth checking with her to find out

I think most people that are actually breeding them know the difference and what questions to ask. Sometimes you dont have to ask the questions, you can look at their baby chicks and tell if they are true or not. However most of your backyard farmers will never get into that much information about the breed or even care to know that much. They are just looking for the puffy cheek, pretty chicken that lays the different color eggs. I have had some customers that prefered the EE's because they felt the more varied feather color gave them character. I agree with HollowOak in saying (but not quoting), i do feel like the true word Ameraucana is used too much. I also refer to Ameraucana on my webpage along with Easter Egger clearly labeled, but its what most people understand as a EE now.

They are the same.  I think it's Aracauna, but people say Americauna all the time.

Araucana = ear tufts, NO muffs or beards, *rumpless,* blue egg only

Ameraucana = no earvtufts; must have both muffs and beards; blue egg only- 2 seperate breeds, different origin

Easter egger- any combination of features; any color egg (although I've never had one lay a white egg); quite often green.

The link I posted earlier has really good info on the history of the breeds. :)

I guess their is not a specific on what an EE is however I expect an EE to be the same in all ways except

1) EE can lay a blue tinted to green tinted egg while Ameraucana lays only blue.
2) Ameraucana has to be a very specific line of colors.

P.S. I have an EE that has the splash coloring but lays an blue green egg. All the stars have to align for a true Ameracauna.

I didnt know myself until I had a phone call once asking me the parents color, I realized at that point I didnt know as much as I should. Once I research it thoroughly I realize I was labeling wrong and quickly corrected my mistake. It wasnt long that I had my webpage up when I got called on it, so...we all live and learn

She is exactly right. :thumbsup   Although I will add that some of the hatcheries labeling Ameraucanas to be true, are not really either.

According to the breeders club, it's something like 99% sold by hatcheries are EEs. And then those folks breed/sell, etc as Ameraucanas and that adds to the problem. There is no Americana, as has been mentioned, and in that description, they say EE. I'd go with a breeder if I wanted real Ameraucanas, personally.

*nods*. Out of my 10 hatchery EEs, today was the first time I've gotten up to 8 colored eggs. One I know for sure lays brown. I had another in my old flock that laid brown, too.

I agree.

I personally think the EE's are more fun in color though. Personal preference.

Right, because EE is not a breed; just birds thst carry the blue egg gene.

I had an EE that laid a gorgeous olive speckled egg- no muffs or beard. I had another that had both and laid a brown egg. I've heard of folks who've gotten pinkish eggs.

And my one confirmed brown egg-laying EE has muffs and a very small, floppy comb. They are mutts, mol, lol. Not really a single comb; definitely not a pea comb. I love EEs, though.

Quote: You think that's bad. I had an ee rooster that when put with a silkie (cream egg layer) the offspring laid cream eggs. When he was put with a lakenvelder (white egg layer) the offspring laid a white egg. I couldn't tell you what egg color gene that ee rooster carried, which is odd since with a white egg layer, any color he carried should have showen up in the offspring.

Yep. That's why I have EEs and haven't gone for a breeder. I LOVE the variety.
Thats crazy, I have never heard of an EE laying brown eggs.  You got the screw!

I knew it was possible, though. That's really why I feel like it's a bit of false advertising. I figure, out of the 20 EEs, I've had total, 2 brown egg-layers is not terrible. I was actually a bit more miffed with this last batch, thinking I was only getting light olivenout of the deal. Today, I have a nice variety of shades. I should go down and check, because I can't remember if I got the lone blue egg today or not.......
