help please.
i'm on my cell phone on my way out of town and can't figure out how to post in emergency\diseases. My five and half month old pullet is opening her beak very wide and extending her neck almost like a yawn but it's not drawn out like a yawn. She is doing it every few seconds. Can someone tell me why she's doing this? and if it is normal? thank you so much!

Sounds a lot like gape worms. Administer fenbendazole (I use liquid goat SafeGaurd at 10% suspension, dose 1ml/kg of weight) mix into her food and feed as the sole ration for 3 days, then repeat in a couple of weeks. She should be fine after this treatment if it is gape worms in her trachea.

I am not there I had to go out of town. have someone checking on her as soon as she can. if it has stopped it was just something stuck? and if it is still happening it is gape worm requiring immediate attention? how do they get gape worm?

All right everyone! I have a weird chicken thing going on. It's not bad but it's never happened with me before lol
So I have this hen who is my best broody and she is currently raising 2 chicks (it was four but there was a dog attack) they are about 4 weeks along and currently confined in a dog kennel together inside the chicken coop to keep them safe. Well the other day, she started laying eggs! While brooding her chicks! I got three eggs in a row so I don't think it was an accident egg haha. Today she may lay a fourth egg we'll see!
And gee I'm not complaining about having a great multitasking chicken mama but I do find it really strange!
Anyone have this happen before?

@StarMeKritten I am so glad to hear you got everything back!!!!

Yeah if it stops it could have just been a long blade of grass that got stuck. But if it continues I would treat for gape worm as soon as you are able.
They get this particular parasite from eating specific bugs like earthworms which can be an intermediate host. All birds are susceptible to this but don't let it stop you from giving your chickens bugs or free ranging. Just deworm your chickens regularly and it will never be a big issue :)

Yup, then shortly after the eggs start coming the chicks get the boot.
