Do I need to try and comb off what I can see? I saw somewhere about putting vaseline on them to try and smother them. Is that worth a try?
The vaseline was for scaly leg mites (mites on the legs). I would not recommend putting vaseline on the birds feathers. I just dust them and keep and eye on them and repeat in 2 weeks and keep an eye on them. Every time I pick a bird up, I check for mites as it seems that they blow in on the wind. 1 bird out of 20 or 60 could have mites while the rest don't. Good luck.

Good morning everyone! It's SO nice out!

Just got back from the All American 5k (wanted to do the half marathon, but they don't let you push strollers in that).

Incubator's all loaded up fingers crossed for an amazing hatch! Finally got some eggs from Greg at www.ultimateorpingtons.com can't wait to see what I get. The eggs are spangled orpington, jubilee orpington, chocolate orpington, buff leghorn, lavender leghorn & Russian orloff. I also have some Black Copper Marans and Lemon Cuckoo Orpington eggs from ebay and Exchequer Leghorns from a BYC'er. Hopefully in a few weeks I'll be inundated with chicks!

Hope everyone enjoys this beautiful Sunday!!!

Will washing in a flea/tick shampoo help or just use seven dust? Never had them before that i noticed so am unsure how to treat them. What do i do about the sand in the coop, remove and replace?

Lice and mite are inevitable, carried by rodents, wild birds and the wind ( I guess). I have use Sevin dust..also have used Ivomec. Also some people DO wash their birds with Adams flea & tick.
No need to replace sand...Just sprinkle with Sevin dust and repeat every 10 days until they are gone.....for now !
