North Carolina

I've got a quail with a prolapsed vent.
We've gotten a few double yolkers the past week that I think were from her.
Usually my husband deals with the quail since they're on the ground I have to like crawl in to get the eggs, but I did it tonight and noticed one was looking off.
When I picked her up I could see the prolapse.

Do I cull or can I fix it?
Googling now....

I've heard it's not hard to fix (push it back in gently) but something you will need to keep an eye on as it could happen again in the future. I'd put a band on her to make checking easier.

All right chicken lovers, I need to borrow your expertise for guess that chicken! I had a delivery today from an emergency sale of 25 surprise chicks, no way of knowing the breeds. Some were obvious to me, others I wanted to run by you guys if you don't mind... Breed #1 Standard Cochin? When I first saw the feathered legs and size I thought Brahma, but when I looked closer it is a single comb. Breed #2: Partridge Rock? The dark coloring on the front of the legs and the single comb had me thinking Plymouth Rock, but the only brown ones I know of would be partridge. Breed #3: This is the one tripping me up. From the yellow legs, chipmunk pattern, and flat comb all I can think of is a Rose Comb Brown Leghorn, but that seems like such an unlikely breed to be put in a surprise box and there are quite a few of them. An EE would also have the chipmunk pattern and flat comb, but I've never seen them with yellow legs especially all with yellow legs have you? All the other breeds I can think of off hand with the light legs and chipmunk pattern all have single combs... There are EE's in there with slate legs, but they look different than these few with the yellow legs. And just for fun here's all of them :)
I'm guessing number 1 to be a salmon faverolle

I cull any hens worth prolapse. If it happened once it will happen again. If more birds start to have that problem then try feeding a low protein feed. More protein makes larger eggs and vent blowouts more likely

Good morning folks

Got missed again by the rain. Guess I'll need to keep
on with hand watering a few things. The pressure switch
on the pump is getting flaky so it would be rather hard on
the pump to use sprinklers to try and keep all the grass
green so hand watering of a few things and the garden
will have to do. Oh the joys and adventures of a place
of your own.

hope everyone has a good day

Hadn't thought of that, I think you're right! She does seem to have a beard and muffs. I've never had them before so didn't see them as chicks. Thanks! :)
I'm thinking #3 might be a partridge Wyandotte? Guess I will know for sure when lobe color comes in. The rose comb brown leghorn seems a little far fetched but all I could come up with. Only Wyandottes I knew of where the laced ones.

@starlingdaly and @missnu01 Thanks for the advice. She's not looking much better this morning, I'm afraid if she doesn't improve I will have to cull tonight. Have her on lower protein feed with more calcium.

Hope everyone has a great day! I was really thinking we'd finally get the rain over here last night with all the humidity, but it's still holding out.

Carolina Town and Country - in Sanford - has a flock swap the first Saturday of every month. A bit of a drive, for you, maybe. It will be held on 7 June.

http://www.carolinatownandcountry.com - you can also sign up for their email program.

Could also check with the Raeford TSC. The new Vass/Southern Pines TSC just held a flock swap. I found out about it too late and didn't make it to that one - my girlfriend and her hubby bought a bunch of chicks at the flock swap and picked up feed/supplies at the TSC.

Lake Rim feed store may have one - they didn't when i was in the area but that was years ago... Don't think Southern Gin and Grain (C Street) has one but check with Tommy of Family Farm Store on Person St - I know he used to carry chix, but don't know about a flock swap.

We're just north of you on the other side of FtBragg - NO RAIN. Never thought I'd say this - but send some our way! Can we choose it to be a nice, gentle, all day rain as opposed to a gully washer 10 minutes to an hour rain? ROFLOL.

I started putting dead mice, meat trimmings, driveway roadkilled frogs, even a bitty that may die into my maggot farming auto feeder! I just cut the bottom of a 2 liter and hung it upside down over a bowl in the run with some wire mesh in it then fill it with dead things maggots instinctively go down so they fall in the bowl and the chickens love it ( circle of life! death fuels life )

Was/is there a lot of smell? I'd been dumping eggs found out and about into our bonfire/burn pile and lately we've had some breezes that carry the scent directly to the house. I know our neighbors wouldn't be happy if we "kept" dead things in a bottle - depending on where I locate it. Don't have a permanent coop yet - still trying to decide where to put it! We do have 8 acres - but narrow and long - so neighbors on both sides of us. Lots of trees in back - both ours and neighboring lands - but that's way too far to run electric and water right now...

Great idea - pics or is that too gruesome?

Where in Sanford are you?
