Good morning folks
frow.gif

It must be spring time as the hatching bugs have started their annual
attacks of folks and chick fever is running amok. I learned long ago
that I am incubator challenged so I use broody hens or BHep, who
is a hatching queen. She has hatched eggs I had put in the refrigerator
and her hatching prices are very reasonable. I like someone else
doing the hatching.

Yes, I have also contracted chick fever. I've got nearly five dozen eggs going in tomorrow! All for MEEEEEEEEE!!!

Second BHep as a hatcher. That woman could hatch a rock.

You know I said a couple were silver. Well one definitely is after further review. So one hen (Hillary for H. Clinton) hatched all five of her eggs. The other, Angie (A. Merkel) hatched 3 of 5. Well when I got up this morning each had four. That means this little chick about six hours old took it upon itself to walk from Hillary to Angie - and survived (wow). Anyhow, I walked into the coop this morning and here comes this chick walking out of Angie's wings and I knew this chick was previously with Hillary. She walked right out to the three week old chicks like it was nothing and you guessed it... the other hens started pecking it in the head so we brought it in. When we got it in we confirmed that no shart its silver/white w/a few blk spots. Interesting. I hope its a hen.

The 3 wk old hens were outside this morning and seemed to really like it. They were under the run, but out and about scratching around with their mommas - cool. I think I need a small annex just for broody hens so they can hatch in peace. Chickens can be real meatheads.

The CAN be real meatheads! I have left broodies and chicks with their flocks before and mostly had them do fine...if there is only One broody mama. Now I pull them. In fact, I don't even let them hatch their own eggs, although I will give some chicks. The fire ants here will swarm a nest as soon as the eggs start pipping, and kill all the babies. Evil, imported demon ants, is what they are.

I've had one broody hen since January. If she stays broody long enough, I'll give her some chicks in about three weeks! And move her into the Juvenile Detention Center, or the rabbit barn. Whichever seems best at the time.

The quail are growing rapidly, and will be able to be moved to cages soon. I'll be glad. They'll start in the hanging cages in the JDC, near the brooder, so they can still have a lamp, but soon will move out. Since I'm expanding the rabbits somewhat, they'll be on the other side of the barn. We didn't find calves this fall, so no worries about bigger critters knocking them about this year.

Hope everyone has a lovely day!

Not to be too picky here but, did you do a proper ice bath? I worked as and was trained in instrument repair. Try this link if you have any questions.

I hope this helps.

Hi Scott,

That's an interesting video. I'm not sure we were quite that specific- I completely filled the cup with ice, added some water but did not fill it all the way, waited a few minutes, then measured by inserting the thermometer in the center while not letting it touch the sides or bottom. It would be interesting to see if I do it the proper way what it reads. I'll have to try that soon! Thanks

I want to get an incubator and try hatching! Any advice on a beginner incubator? Anyone?
I'll give you advice if I am able to successfully hatch any!

I bought this one... http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/farm-innovators-pro-series-circulated-air-incubator for ~$100 with a coupon. I really REALLY wanted this Brinsea... https://www.brinsea.com/p-491-octagon-20-advance-digital-egg-incubator.aspx but couldn't justify spending $435 w/ shipping. I would love to have a broody hen, but none of my breeds are likely to go there. If anyone has chicks now or in a couple weeks that are likely to grow up to be broody, and you are within a couple hours of Greensboro, I would love to buy or swap with you! Please let me know. Thanks, you awesome helpful BYC peeps!

Rabyn, don't buy it from there! Check it out on Amazon first they sell them for half the price. I bought mine from hayneedle and saved $50 of the Amazon price. I think they were having a sale that day.

Well, if you're going to get some for yourself, sure id like some. But if you're not, then don't go out of your way.

Hey Claudia,

I'm not going to get eggs this time... I have too many in the incubator as it is anyway! I'm going to keep her in mind if I decide to get some in the future, and if so, I'll let you know :)

not a proooooblem. I was just telling the hubby this weekend that I think I'm done incubating for a bit. Maybe i'll start up again in the late fall or something and raise up the babies over the winter so that they can be good and laying come next spring. .... unless I find the parents of my meat bird production, lol.
