NH-RuthAnn, get that baby a frozen washcloth! Pick a nice thick fluffy cloth, but not so new that it is full of lint. Wet it and freeze it. Help her gnaw on it the first time. Unlike an ice cube you don't have slippage and choking issues. Once old enough the baby can manipulate the washcloth herself and gnaw where it feels best.

Of course there is always the old fashioned remedy: whiskey rubbed on the gums. Doctors used to also recommend parogoric on the gums, but I'm not positive you can get paragoric any more. Our pediatrician retired January 2010 and he was of the train of thought to lessen the pain symptoms as much as possible to help the child rest. The pharmacy gave us this huge bottle with the tiniest drip of paragoric in the bottom. Just about everybody in this country older than me (40-something) used paragoric for stomach upset when they were children. If you aren't familiar with it: paragoric is made from opium. It works great, but I tend to think whiskey comes with fewer issues.

And the frozen washcloth would have even fewer side effects, lol!

A wet miserable day here in the big city, let the Barred Rocks out this morning, the Silkies got fed and watered in their building and left inside. Thry will just stand out and get wet then look like drowned rats!
