I use the Purina Layena, I have tried Dumor (Tractor Supply) and Nutrena laying feed, Country Acres laying feed (Purina) and Mule city mash-- I didn't realize that it was powdery although I asked--. My girls seem to like the Purina layena the best and I get more eggs from them on it. Of, course everyone has a favorite.

From everthing I have read, the type is improtant, you need to use the type with the Mother in it. I add Apple cider Vingar 1 tbsp and Honey 1 tbsp per gal to my water for the newly hatched chicks. they graduate to regular water when they go outside. I do plan on starting the outside birds on just the apple cider opnce I get things finished outside and can my feed arean a little more organized.

NH.... the tote should be fine for the night or two. You will need to cover it somehow.

BC... I just NEED to see a picture of Wilma with a scrunchy in her hair (?) feathers lol

EFudd... I use layena, thats what my feed store sells so thats what they get. Mine are like garbage pails and eat everything and anything.

Phew...thank you SO much for that load off my shoulders!! I was worried the tote wouldn't work, and THEN I was going to have to go into panic mode!!

What is a good treat for them? Is it something I can get at TS?? I want them to LIKE ME, after all, Gavin has been spoiling them and they're going to miss him!! Do you have to measure their food (like cats, horses, etc...) or are they okay with free feeding? Do I have to do anything special for their water?? Will they be stressed from their "move"?? If so, what can I expect?

sorry to ask so many questions!! I'm going to be a new momma shortly!!

BHep, I forgot to ask, how did the DS do today? Is he recovering well? Give him an extra hug from us all and tell him HAPPY 6mo day!!

BC - I agree with BHep - we NEED to see photos of Wilma.

Okay, so this orange stuff for poison ivy...it would work great IF it actually STAYED on my skin rather than flaking off. Stupid poison ivy just HAS to party around the joints.

How I wish I could just chop off all the limbs that have it until it's gone...then reattach them.

Okay, I am done complaining....for now!! lol

NH Don't panic you have kids. Just think back how you muttled through and did fine. You can use a piece of chicken wire and make a lid for your chick box. Bend the edges over that's what I use. As far as a treat for youngins I gave mine rolled oats. Go to your local food store and see mister Quaker.

It is a nice thing to have in your hand that they will eat and get to love you. You don't have to measure their food. Now I have a 5 gallon feeded and I only fill it half way because I know they will eat it in two days and it is less chance the food will get moldie damp etc. Just me because cautious. If I go away then I will fill it up more. Hope that helps Back to work I go.

EFudd, you always have to have feed for your chickens even when they are eating bugs during the summer, if you want to keep the eggs coming, and never feed layer to young chicks too much calcium, you'll either need to buy chick feed or just buy Purina Flock Raiser and offer oyster Shell to your hens in a separate bowl.
Looking forward to seeing your new babies Ruthann, I have 2 of HT's Lavender Orps, you'll love the color. Looking forward to seeing Wilma in her new scrunchie Bird Collector

Beth, can you send me some pictures?? My brown one ended up being a cockerel but more than that he is turning into a beautiful wheaten! Did you not get very many with feathered legs? My gold cockerel has them and I kept two pullets that have them and the wheaten boy is French as well. I did end up with about 1/2 that were clean legged. Another thing was it was really hard to tell who was going to be girl/boy for a long time, they really do fool you from this group, it took me a couple of months before the real truth came out...

You know, I am still on the fence about the one I held back thinking it was a boy... it still could be a girl.

Thanks for the offer Ht but with chicks hatching just about everyday, I guess I'll be up to my eyeballs. But those girls have turned out so pretty, how do you decide which ones to keep and which ones to sell?

NH -- When my first set of new chicks were little and still in the house I used to give them frozen ( thawed of course) for treats. they are prefect for chick, no added salt and soft so they don't need to have grit (although mine thought chick grit was a treat all on its own) They especially liked green peas and corn. Not so much carrots, but would eat green beans. I would use canned as they can have too much added salt. I did let them eat out of my hands and was very popular with them.
