Marans are a breed, they are known as the "chocolate eggs layers" as they do lay the very dark brown eggs that can look like a piece of chocolate. I have no idea what color this group will lay as they aren't quite there yet.

......we already have the black coppers and just LOVE them.

Yes, the maran roos seem to get quite large.........nearly as big as a jersey giant roo.

I had gotten one cuckoo hen before the coppers and then the coppers as chicks. The hubby fell in love with the cuckoo hen as it seems she would whistle to him each evening. First hen in more than 15 years of chickens to whistle to him.

We lost the hen

and he would like more cuckoo hens, especially if they will whistle.
I was thinking a day trip for some birds but I do think Hickory would be more than a day trip as there is NO straight, fast way over there

HenThymes,

I saw earlier that you may have extra eggs for hatching? do you ever have any extra of your lavender orpingtons? I have been reading a lot about them recently and fell in love with the color.
Thanks
Amy

Yes I have hatching eggs, currently have 7 available as I put some in the fridge the other day.

I just moved everyone to new pen the other day so it slowed them down just a bit but still getting one or two a day. Be happy to help if I can.

Bhep - Glad you got your internet fixed. Usually when ours go out, we unplug the router, count to ten, then plug it all in. It takes a few minutes to reset itself but it comes back all better! And grats on your award!

Congrats, Bhep!!!!!!!

to everyone else, too. I'm way behind after a crazy few days but I hope you are all well!!!!

So questions about my chicks. I have been so surprised at the personalities of my chicks! The friendliest of the older group by far are the Sussex and the Wyandottes, followed by the Welsummers, then the Marans, and the shyest, flightiest of them all are the Orpingtons!! So do their personalities as chicks carry over to adulthood? Are they just a little slower to warm up to people? The Sussex and Wyandottes hop right in my hand and are happy as can be to get rubs and snuggles, but the Orpingtons want nothing to do with me! I hope they'll be my friend soon! They are also the least feathered and smallest of the bunch. Interesting. Oh, and I may have found someone with a few Cochins!!!! About an hour away, but I'm hoping I can get a few. As always, if any of you have any please let me know!!!

And, because I promised, although I wish I hadn't....here is the photo of the cake I made/decorated/etc... Let me just say, it was the WORST job EVER!! My roses turned out nicely, but the decorating job was NOT my best work. I was unhappy with the final results, but the "client" was happy.
