It is just our Serama and our silkie. We got the bantam Dominique but she had the Coryza, we had to put her down. Clementine is slowly getting use to other birds, but she would rather be in the house by herself. She has started laying eggs

we came home to a half dozen eggs in the fridge.

LDL, I am so sorry to hear that, I hope you can get it under control soon

everyone

Just stopping in for a quick hello..... going back outside to enjoy this beautiful weather.

Nothing hatching yet

I have Quail in the Brinsea..... So I will be locking down 49 eggs in the Dickey tonight. Then more Quail eggs lockdown on Sat. Then a bunch of hatches all by the end of the month. Then it is time to slow down and grow out the chicks and start rehoming rooster.

I must confess.... I did bid on an auction yesterday

AND I am searching for Pheasant eggs or chicks for my mom.

Hello All ,

I am the Allison of gavinandallison - the DH is normally the talker on here ... while he is not around , I would like to ask you all a question

how do you deal with the number of roosters that come out of every hatch - I am totally freaked out that we have so many roos that neighbors may complain -

Eating these bird is not even a option - it would be like frying up my Pug , I just could not do it ( not saying there is anything wrong with folks that can - I am just not able, shucks I can not even eat eggs anymore )

Right the chicken addict AKA Gavin has :
2 lovely white roos
2 wonderful black roos
6 buff orp roos
and 7 chicks that could be roos or hens -- who knows ...

This is a major problem with hatching your own and buying chicks. We do eat ours and also have a family that we and a few family friends provide birds to for fairly cheap prices. There are only so many homes you can find for those extra Roos. Soooner or later everyone has to come to the realization that those extra Roos have to go one way or another. Too many Roos in with the hens doesn't work at all.

I know some that turn their roos out. They do have feed out and water, but no protection. They eventually get picked off by predators. This is a way that I do not agree with.

I am picky about who my birds go to. Even those I know will be processed. I make sure they will be treated well before the end. 3 years ago I tried and tried to find homes for a group of white silkie Roos. After 4 months I had to give up on the last 6. I placed an add at a local Asian market for processed freeranged silkie/black meat Roos. Mom and I did the processing since I didn't know the folks that called for the birds birds or how they would be treated. I had to go take the adds down due to the volume of calls.

Matt

SCM, I'm so sorry.

Some of those little chicks just don't grow like they should, and eventually they just don't blossom and give up. Its heart breaking.

(((hugs)))

My little munchkins are growing like WEEDS! Still sure I only have 1 roo (splash or cuckoo maybe? Needs a home!).... looks like 2 ee/cochin/silkie mix pullets, 2 red cochin bantam pullets, 2 Japanese bantam grey pullets and 2 splash silkies still unknown sex.

Anyways.... so 2 JB pullets and 1 cochin bantam roo need a new home!

thats the problem we ran into here also Allison, I found that because game cock fighting is so popular that even roos that aren't games are used to train the ones that are. I got to see it first hand by accident, so we started processing our own, that way we knew they had a great life up until that day and that they were put down humanely. It's still not easy for us, but like Matt said you can only have some many roos. some people have what they call bachlor quaters for their extra roos but then you will still have the crowing. Wish there was an easier way.

HT - wow great picture.

thanks to eveyone hearing me vent about rooster overage... such good advice . At this point I think my only solution is to seprate the boys as they get older , since Henry is the boss of the Silkie Coop .. and pray the neighbors wont hate me -- I think I have discovered I am not a good chicken momma , not because I don't love my bird ( OMG I adore them ) ... but because I am not farmer material . I fall too hard too fast in love with critters . If I even knew I had to process my birds I would be on the doctors couch the next day ...

Just thinking about it make me want to cry .
