I need to know how to make a hen NOT go broody. Had birds since 2003 and still can't figure that one out. I know as soon as it warms up in late March to April I am going to have 12-18 hens become useless. I only have a place for 4 broodies at a time to set and hatch eggs safely and then raise their babies. The rest I will be removing from nests several times a day trying to break them.

Any bantam hen can safely hatch serama eggs as long as they are eggs with good shells.

Thanks

I, too, have never been able to figure out how to make a hen go broody....for that matter I've never been able to break a broody either...lol. With Silkies, I've ALWAYS got at least one broody.

Since most people isolate the brooding hen, if you choose a Silkie, you wouldn't have to be worried about it being picked on since it won't be with anyone else.

I do have a Cochin bantam in with the big girls (they provide our eating eggs); Esther goes broody about 3 times a year....but my gosh, she'll tear you up if you go near her while she's setting. My Silkies NEVER attack me when they're brooding.

My cochin bantams love to be broodie, I've even found them on ducks eggs can you imagine that............forgot to say it's 5 here this morning, Glad to see BC is okay, talk to ya'll later.

My cochin bantams were just 6months old when they started laying and sitting they were my best hatchers, just so happened that my muscovies would lay in the nest boxes that the chickens used.

Good Morning you'll

Power went out at 6:30; called Duke and they said it would be on at 10, so we didn't crank up the generator... 10 came and no power

called Duke and they said it will be on at 5P.....so, we cranked up the generator.

Funny thing is, when I woke my husband at 7 to tell him, he ran to the garage, grabbed a propane heater and set it up in the diningroom/hatchery so the fuzzy butts wouldn't get cold

hadn't even given me a good morning kiss or anything

Gas logs in the fireplace keep the house toasty.....DH put another propane heater in the barn so all the Silkies are comfy.

Only problem is, I can't use the computer and another appliance at the same time~~so I probably won't be back online til tonight.

You'll take care, and stay warm
