Good to see everyone is doing okay

I can understand the snake being scary, don't think I'd want to argue with a rattler either.

Sounds like you must live close to a nesting area for that many to show up.......wow.

Hope you recover soon from the kick, double shot is right rough to get, sure hope the horse didn't have shoes on

and you can cure the kicking habit. I teach our horses young that we don't tolerate kicking near people or while riding. I'm sure you do too.

Hi everyone,

Been recouping for a while. First the dog bite, then a very bad scare with my mother-in-law and then hurt at work again. My MIL was taken to the er at Womack and CTed, they told us 99% sure end stage pancreatic cancer and she would not be leaving the hospital. They would do a biopsy the next day to confirm. Turn out to be 6 stones in her bile duct (had her gall bladder out 5 yrs ago) removed the stone and said -Hey no cancer- rotten thing to do to a family. why say that if they haven't confirmed it! Then I got double barrel kicked across the room in to a brick wall by a horse on Thursday. No ER this time, but still very bruised on the legs and have to keep them elevated to keep the bruises from spreading.

I love all the gorgeous pics especially the little chicks. SCM thanks for the shots of the pullet. Looks like she is getting her sire's fluffy legs.

Doubletraining and michaelinnc84. I have 2 cochin pens right now, The first is my smooth blue roo with 2 black and 2 blue pullets. The blues haven't started laying yet and the blacks give 1 egg a day and seem to go broody regularly. The second has 2 smooth splash and 2 blues with a black frizzle cockerel. The cockerel is much younger then the hens and I hope he will catch up and start breeding soon. The first roo I had picked out flew at me one too many times in one day and he went away as I won't have an aggressive roo at my place. I hatch a few chicks at a time and right now have some but need a bit more time to figure out which are the cochins and which are the marans since they decided to start hatching 3 days early in the bator instead of the hatcher and got mixed up. The marans are blue with out many feathers on their legs and are hatching BBS like the cochins.

Goodness! You seem to be getting the poo end of the stick lately. I'm so sorry to hear all that!

I hope this really is the last of it and it only gets better from here. 2011 has been a %^%^$ of a year!

Greetings all!

I am new here, recently out of the military and bought some land. Have always dreamed of doing a little homesteading type thing. I don't have anything but a couple dogs and a human kid now, but am planning on starting with some guineas, adding some chickens (thinking RIRs maybe) shortly and eventually a dairy goat (or two). I want to the chickens and goats to share the yard and the guineas to range out over mine and my neighbor's garden (her suggestion/request not my idea). In a perfect world I would get me some keets soon to have "adults" by the spring, but the entire timing is based on $$ on building housing for everybody as we go.
Right now I am doing my research and planning and looking for all of the pitfalls that might creep up. I studied ag in college, but that was a couple years back and in PA, so I know there are big differences. so any advice that way would be great. Have read all the FAQ pages and stuff already, and am just getting more and more excited.
my neighbor has the brooder for keets, but I am not comfortable with raising them and letting them run completely wild, (which she has done before, and likes -I note the short lifespan and violent end of every bird of her last flock and decided not for me). So we are waiting till i can get a coop for protection at night.

BTW, I am about halfway between Fayetteville and Sanford.

looking forward to learning a lot!

Thanks all forthe encouragement and advice! Seriously never thought something like that would ever freak me out but I guess that type of viscious attack from someone supposed to be defending just threw me! Hope has become a great big sister so far. She herds all her charges into a little group and cheeps like crazy if one wanders off by itself! She's taught the first hatched how to drink and showed them where the hard boiled yolk was in the dish for them. I'll have pics tomorrow when I can get to a good computer.

The one reason I don't have them, they sleep in trees. Once they get out, you dont get them back in from what I've seen and been told. The ones around here get killed on the road alot too. So that ended that love affair as a kid for me, before I ever had one lol

goodluck with yours, sounds like you aint to far off from me

I'm getting all excited about the state fair! They're taking entries for the contests now, so I'm busy picking out what canned goods are going to be entered this year. Also trying to decide if I'm going to enter any of birds this year. Last year went really well, I worried like crazy and my rooster turned out fine. Don't know if I wanna stress being away from him for a few days again?

Hi, everybody! We have our first baby due in November and I've decided to let some of our extra chickens go. If anybody is interested, I have a trio of Wheaten Ameraucanas and a pair of Lemon Cuckoo Orpingtons available. We also make goat's milk soaps and other homemade goodies such as cross stitch pieces and crochet items. Check our my auctions or PM me with questions.
