and
from Johnston County... BHep has me beat, I am about 2 hours away from you!! Welcome and I hope you enjoy your "stay"...everyone here is so sweet and helpful, I have learned so much in my short few months!!
SJM - Thank you so much for your kind words about my cake!!
Okay ladies & gents...I am confused. I either have someone hiding eggs (a possibility) or they have stopped laying. I was getting a BIG beautiful chocolate egg about every other day (still getting my daily light browns and GREENISH one...lol) and I knew it was from one of the 3 Marans....but the past few days, no eggs. I don't know where they could be hiding them, if they are!!
I will say only ONE of my layers is currently laying in the nesting box as they prefer the corner...the CORNER of all places!! At least I can find them neatly piled up!! Any suggestions?? Is it possibly due to the change in the weather? Could they be on strike??
I don't think anyone is bound as last night they all seemed very excited/happy to see me and my bucket o'oats!! On a side note,
we do need to either separate or finally cull Cotton-tail as the poor fellow is picked on relentlessly by the other two. His comb is full of scars and they are picking out his saddle feathers (I think that's what they're called...since I'm not sure, I'll say his pretty tail). That's not fair on him...however, he won't let any of us near him either. So....anyone need a Black Orpington Roo?? I am having a hard time actually stomaching the thought of helping cull, and I know DH will need the help. In my state, I can barely stand the smell of eggs cooking and for the first time in my life I got queazy at the sight of my own blood....silly pregnancy!!
SCM - I promise to take good care of the baby and myself!! I think the nonstop nausea as well as the stress from the cakes caused the slight drop in weight. Doctor wasn't too concerned, so I shan't be either!!
Thank you for your concern though. Did they make you get a toxic-something or other test? Because we have cats and "farm animals" I was checked for some toxic parasite as well.... no clue why they didn't check with the first one...
JLoe- I hope you have a better day today teaching!! I don't know if you've mentioned it (I may have missed it, if so, my apologies) but what grade/ages and subject(s) do you teach? I use to teach English Literature/Grammar/Drama for 6-12 grade and College Speech/Debate, Communications. Then I married and moved, so now I teach my chickens about Oats and my cats about mice....
Maybe even someday my DD about sheep, who knows there!!
Well, have a great day everyone!! I wish you all the best with many many eggs (for those of you whose chickens are laying for the first time) and those of you hatching...a great hatch!!
OOhh, I can't go without telling you that we are looking into getting our entire property fenced in (with an electrical fence running along the top and bottom and middle section) so we can have sheep and let our chickens free range!! They are going through THREE 50# bags of feed a month!! I don't know what those Reedy Fork Farm fellows put in that feed, but it is being devoured!!
It's like chicken crack or something!!
If you all bring your shovels, I promise to make you a cake!!
