Tick, my dad has a 10 yr old roo that does the job, but he has 2 hens because we found out that he was only serving his favorites.

Luke, I had a silkie cross brood in a 5 gallon bucket on 29 eggs (all hatched which made me remove the bucket as a bird the size of a silkie should not be able to hatch that many at a time in a normal nest)

Well only lost one silkie roo while the hubby took care of the animals for a week ( he even remembered to collect eggs this time!) Guess the multiplying effect of not getting eggs this summer taught him a lesson

This monrning I waited until sunup to feed, since I didn't have any meetings this morning. I stood there for nearly half an hour watching a red-wattled pullet searching the calf area. She poked through their bedding, examined the hay rack, and tried really hard to get into a small pen which was closed off. I went and opend a pop hole in the door for her. There are two nest boxes in that little pen. She was exploring it when I had to leave.

I think I'll go looking for eggs this evening when I get home. I might just get lucky. Or she might be proactive and looking for later, but I'll remain hopefull!

Jake is currently on "vacation" and will get reevaluated after a couple weeks on arthritis meds, to see if he must be retired or can return to work. Cross your crossables, please. In the meantime, Levi is 12 weeks today, and weighed in Wednesday at 43 1/2 pounds. He's going to be huge. Must. Get. Socialized. Now! He's going through a chewing on everything and everyone stage. He's got a lot to learn. One thing I learned with Reilly is that I have a lack of children in my life. I need to expose him to children, both at home and in a different environment. Anyone want to loan me their kids?

Loan, mind you. I WILL return them!

Time to make up my mind. Think the black one is looking like a rooster with the red coming in. What do ya'll think.

This one looks like the hen I lost from the cold. Amercauna/ Polish mix thinking about her also.
