You must go into work late!  I work 7 - 5 Mon - Thurs.  Never enough hours in the day for my home chores:)

Today I will just for those appointments. Otherwise I could work from home today. But I do try to work around my students schedules if they give me enough advance time to do so. Thursday I'll be back in from 8:00 to 5:00. Friday is another appointment day. Mondays are 8:00-2:15 with no break, Tuesdays are like Thursdays. I'll spend all day Friday and Saturday grading fifty exams. Yay. But I love that each day is different. I love my job!

hello everyone! I realized half way through yesterday that my 16 year old cat had not come out in the living room or to eat all morning. I left him alone but figured when it would get around time for dinner (8 pm) he would definitely come out. Well he did not.... so I went to get him out from under my bed. He had a bad limp of his back right leg. I am getting ready to take him to the vet in a few but have to get my 22 mo old in car first or I will never get cat out!

Please keep my Tatum James in your thoughts today! I hope nothing majorly is wrong. I am not sure I could handle it!

Heard something today from a co-worker that got me thinking and a bit upset:
Since the chickens don't lay much in the winter (or at all) and we still need to feed them, he suggested to butcher in the winter and start again each fall. Don't know if anyone at BYC does that, but don't think I can. Would rather put some light in the coop to help productivity.
What are your thoughts NC?

Get breeds that lay well in winter. My Orpingtons always have for me!

Saying an extra prayer that nothing is wrong and that it's just arthritis or something simple.

Just had to come on here to lament... I really hate being powerless!! Heard a commotion in the coop, thought nothing of it, because it honestly sounded like one of my roosters was trying to do his thing to an unwilling participant. Finished up feeding & watering when I noticed the commotion was still going on and my 2 roos were following me around. Walked into the coop to witness my guineas ganging up on one of my BLRW (I think that's what it was anyway)...I was getting "pecked" as I booted them all away, but by the time I got to her....

I picked her up and she took her final breath in my arms. To make matters worse...I am crying at a drop of a hat these days and I had a hard time getting OUT of the coop because I couldn't see. I am really hoping the rest of you are having a better morning!!

Now to try and coral either the rest of the youngsters or the guineas and contain them in the grow-out pen. Good thing it's nap-time, right??

It just so happened that ours stopped laying in the early/late fall and so we processed them. That being said, they were past their laying prime (they were going on 3 years of age) for being a non-production bird and it had been almost 6 months since they last laid an egg. We keep ours year round so long as they are healthy and laying (if they are molting or stopping because of winter, that's still healthy!). I think it would get expensive to constantly have a new supply of layers ready, but I am still relatively new to chickens!! We keep different birds for different reasons (we have ones specifically for laying vs meat) and only process our layers when they are no longer able to lay. If I was THAT concerned with eggs, I would put a light in the coop and spare myself the trouble of processing birds that are still in their prime! JMHO though!! Like I said, I am new at the whole chicken raising!!

I'm sure he's going to be fine. They'll fix him right up.
