Is there a source, preferably within a couple hours of Fayetteville, to buy feed in bulk at a discount? Surely there's a mill somewhere?
Cokers feed mill?
Nahunta makes some of theirs?

Sorry about your sweet hen Wild.

We only had a 2 hour delay, but I think it is just to give tie for rain to run off. There are a fewroads known to ice up, or flood after a good winter rain...

Look'in good!
Just trying to get as much done before work goes crazy next week.. this has been a fun project so far trying to use what I have to make this work. Free stuff from craigslist and the crate $30 I think so far i have $70 with the hardware cloth.. which is really expensive

I know i will need some hinges for doors trying to keep it under $100 total.. I think it is doable!

I have thought about checking out drakes the swaps in e-city can be a hit and miss sometimes lol. I will have my eyes and ears open. I know there are swaps on the 9th in town. My friend has two beautiful toms in need of some hens. I am on the hunt for silkies, cochin bantams and frizzles. I might end up leaving the swap with something else. Like my recent buy of 6 Speckled Sussex from TSC. They sure don't keep chicks in stock there very long. I must have bought them right on time, because the next day every single chick was gone. Just a bunch of cute ducks left. Anyways keeping my fingers crossed I can find my friend some turkeys.

Or bantams!
I have a friend who lives down the road from me (Rocky Hock) who needs to find a home for 3 black frizzles, 2 white Japenese mix , 1 barred cochin mix. They are 4 months old. I think one of the frizzles might be a rooster. The white ones look like roos(big combs) and the barred one looks like a hen. I'm taking the 2 silkies and the sultan and silkie-cochin mix. She might could even give you some eggs to hatch if you want silkies, frizzles, sultans or cochins.

Here is a picture of the barred one and frizzle on the left. The silkie-cochin is one of mine

Thanks AmyLou!
My husband and I both work in Lenoir so we commute together. He works 8-5 so the nice guy he is, he goes in early and either works out and changes into work clothes or chills at my office for the hour.
Cleaned out the sand today from the brooder. It wasn't cleaning up very easy and was starting to smell and sooo dusty in the house. Hoping it's just because it's play sand. I still have wood chips so I put those back in. Also, sand was falling out on some of the sides. Put plastic down, stapled it to the cardboard sides and then put the wood chips down. Now they are digging around in the wood chips getting it the water and food

soooo... put the water container on a few blocks to raise it up and zip-tied the food container up a bit. Hope that works.

I elevate my waterers, and they still find ways to get chips in it, or dump it at times. Don't know if this will help, but if we give different ways of doing, maybe you can see what fits for you. I always use low dust pine shavings, and they go into compost when I'm done. The chicks get changed often, and if a waterer gets knocked over, they get changes again (always annoying). Baking soda may help where you have had odor, but I would not stay that rout if it is causing it. 18-28 gallon tubs do pretty good, and give room to run. I've used a dog crate too. Some use bird cages, like you would expect to see a house bird in. They can be messy, and ducks are even messier babies. Be careful that the staples you used don't come loose; check them for safety. I use the tubs, and when I change them out, I put them in a clean one, and the old one goes out the door to be hit with the hose real good, then I clean it for the next change.

I give an open feeder for a week at least, then they get the upright, but they kick food out every where anyway. These were just changed, and then bounced around enought to off balance the water, and had to do it again, right after I took this. I don't think I had it as level as should be, but still a buch of little hot messes.

Thanks Chasity! They have all settled down now. So cute and funny to look at them all sprawled out flat. They look so comfy and content. They have been coming to the door when I open it thinking my only reason is to give them their favorite treat (spinach leaves) They will even venture out of the pen - guess they can smell it:)
Thanks for everyones posts here at BYC. I love reading everyones thoughts and experiences.
Didn't get anything done outside today since it rained on and off all day. Went food shopping and cleaned inside the house. Not suppose to be any better tomorrow - ugh!
Shutting down for the night - will check in again tomorrow.
