North Carolina

Well I might be losing a Cornish X tonight. One sneaked out of coop today and hid underneath the coop, which on one end about 1 ft and 1/2 off the ground and the other is almost touching the ground. He is hid back under the low end and I cannot get to him. So if he survives the cold hopefully nothing will eat him. He is only 4 weeks old.... I am kind of sad!
Do you know how to make a chicken leg hook out of a coat hanger? (try google) Put/tie it on the end of a broom handle, and pull the little bird to safety.

Good Morning, Happy Chicken People!

On my latest hatch, I had one weak chick with a misshapen head, one with a slipped tendon, and after investigating one that peeps All. The. Time. I've come to the conclusion that it's blind. The three are different breeds. It's distressing to put down chicks, as you all know. None of my husbands snakes will eat birds either, so it's a waste in many ways. I just told him he has to get one that will!

In other news, hubby informs me that while he was spreading a truckload of sand in the barn lean- to yesterday, he thoughtlessly left gates open. I nag my cityboy hubby about gates continuously, but he just doesn't remember. So, Levi got into the pasture with chickens and turkeys.

And ignored them.

I'm both frustrated with my gate-forgetful man and pleased with the pup.

Enjoy your day, everyone!

Hello everyone!

Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous! Wish today was like that! I am a SAHM with a 3.5 and 22 month old. We need nice weather to go outside.
Boy oh boy do I hear you!! I am SO tired of this rain and mud...I think I have the cabin fever that affected Johnny in the Shining or something!! I have a 2.5yo and a 10mo (plus an incubating 4mo old...HEHE) - ALL girls
th.gif
I NEED outside play time to convince my oldest that dirt is our FRIEND!! LOL So long as the dirt is poop free!!

Beth - I am going to stalk them like you wouldn't believe...oh wait....they spend ALL day on the deck waiting for hand outs...I don't know WHY, it's not like I continually go out there and give them treats or something because they are SO cute...wait, what?? I do?? Oh yeah, OOPS!! LOL

Hollow -

Poor Mr. Hollow - try not to be TOO hard on him. We are all forgetful at times, especially us CITY-folk/trying to be country folks!!

Chickens & ducks will be locked up for a bit - we are getting our soil for our gardens delivered today and will be spending the weekend shoveling and prepping the garden/mock raised beds. DH is trying to get off of work a little early today to get started...it's going to be a LOT of work, and I am hoping it'll be warm enough to bring the girls outside to "help" - so I can at least put the newspaper (YAY, thanks RF & CSB & Beth) and cardboard down while DH cuts the trees into more manageable sizes...We only have 1 shovel, so he gets to do the back-breaking work (he claims it's because I am pregnant and don't need to strain myself, but the TRUTH is, he thinks he can do it faster without me...LOL, sadly, he's probably right!! LOL). I think I might need to have a shoveling party tomorrow and just bake up a LOT of goodies - death by chocolate chocolate chip cookies anyone? All you need to do is stop by with a shovel and ... LOL, I HAD to try!!

Have a great weekend everyone....today is the first day of March which means SPRING is just around the corner...somewhere!! Welcome to all the new folks too!!

Don't put down the slipped tendon chick! Its easy to fix. You draw the chicks leg up, all the way under their body, then you stretch it out straight behind them and the tendon should jump right into the appropriate groove. It may take only one rep or you may have to do this several times, but I've never had it fail.

Where is there a flock swap tomorrow? Tell me, I must know.

Well my chicken is still under the coop. I could not get him out despite the best efforts of me and my hubby. I could not tell if he was still breathing (I did not have my contacts in when I went out there this morning). I left out a little feed and water in case he makes it out!

Bummed....

NewHomesteader2010 I hear ya! That was one reason I got chicks was so my oldest would have some of the same experience I had while growing up. I grew up on a Broiler production farm (gasp!) But you know... I learned so much about hard work and responsibility that I would not trade it for the world. I was wanting my kids to have just a little bit of that.

If I do not get out of this house I am going to go crazy. But 37 is a little chilly for the kiddos.
