North Carolina

So it's ok that the ones already out are picking at some of the other ones? It looks like they are trying to help each other out! LOL

Group effort !!

Congratulations on your hatch Luke! And thanks for the advice Beth, I don't use "unsupervised heat" at all. I've heard of too many coops burning from it and I just won't chance it. I think I will start moving them outside during the day though, and just bring them in at night.

On another note, I set 2 Pekin eggs to check for fertility, and one is pipping!! It's 2 days early, but I'm excited to see the little guy! This will be my first duck hatch!!

hello all fellow north carolina chicken lovers....... i am searching for two hens about 8 wks old to add to my loving group i have 2 RIR and 4 brahmas looking for something colorful and beautiful and great egg layers... around the same age and having a hard time finding anyone around that has any if anyone on here does or you have any info. on where i can go please please share thank you so very much!!!

Wish there was something out there for my "scissor" beaked girl. she has to eat all day long just to keep up. she's so much smaller than the other girls too.
Been thru that too. Just keep feeding her in the deep dish bowl. I had 2 out plus the feeder and she used all three. We filed her beak every week and trimmed it with toenail clippers about every 2 to 3 weeks. I think she would be here today if it wasn't for the illness all my Belgians had. Here are some of her pictures. I miss little Pippa.
About 2 months old

Little piggy

This was taken after we trimmed her beak. Of course it did bleed. Just have a styptic pencil handy

When I first notice. I think she was 2 weeks old

just keep her beak trimmed like I said and if you want you can follow the feeding types that others have tried on that thread I posted a link of to you. Peepers would switch between chick food, pellets, and or scratch grains. But he always ate outta a deep feeder that I kept full 24/7. If you need more help just ask

I will be buying my supplies/materials for the coop and run in the next few days.
Need to know if there is a cheaper resource for hardware cloth and poultry netting than Lowe's or Home Depot. Was $54 for 50ftx48in roll of hardware cloth, and $37ish for the 1in poultry netting, 48"x50ft.
Sometimes you can find both cheaper at your local feed or hardware store, the smaller ones who want to get rid of their stock. I would call TSC and your Southern States store, (ours here is Yoders) and check their prices compared to Lowe's and Home depot. TSC did have their on sale due to Chick days but I am not sure if that sale is going on still..
Good luck....

If DD 1 is afraid of a tiny little goat...what will happen with a HUGE cow ??

Even the smallest "mini" cow is huge !!!
AND ..P.S. You HAVE EEs. The ones you got from me are EEs, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Barred Rocks. Next time I will put name tags on them.

I am just going to claim pregnancy amnesia and hope no one really REALLY notices!!

As for DD...well, let's be honest, she's afraid of chicks...you know the itty bitty ones (a few weeks old maybe when we got them from you??) - yeah, she wouldn't even TOUCH them. I don't have a farm girl, I have a "Pretty Pretty Princess".
th.gif
The one who will "shovel" dirt from a mound but fuss if she falls in the grass and gets dirt on her hands...the one that will pick up a pooh encased egg, but freak out if a chicken/duck gets too close. THAT is what I am dealing with. I think no matter WHAT is brought to the Meadows...she will find an excuse to be afraid of it and DH will have an excuse to say, "Suck it up princess"...LOL
Welcome to all the new folks! You found the best group in the best forum!

NH, I second what Beth said. If she's afraid of a goat less than two feet tall, what is a cow going to do to her!? Hmmmm...You should come visit and let her see my calves. They're only about 300-400 pounds at three months, so still small. Of course, I have big dogs, and if I recall you aren't a dog fan, so that might not be a good idea.

If I were you, I'd try to talk hubby into trying a goat out while you've got an offer. Goats eat faaaarrrrrrr less than a cow! Of course, both can put some food away, and for a milking animal you'll go through a lot of grain, but goats will eat far less. And of course, they are easier to handle, too.

My unsolicited 2 cents!

Oh! Luka...congrats on the hatch! Welcome to a new addiction!
First - I ALWAYS covet your advice!! Secondly - I'd LOVE to visit (and get some cow loving in)...although I may leave jealous of your set up and all of your birds and well...green really isn't my color!!

it was Beth and CSB working for the avocado eggs, my projects are different

ACK!!

Sorry...I knew you three all had projects, but couldn't remember what was what. I'd blame it on my pregnancy amnesia, but in this case, it's just plain old forgetfulness!! Sorry!! Hmm...maybe I'll blame it on having the chicken flu or something out of the ordinary like that...you know, so I don't have to use the "OLD" word!! LOL

NH, then we'll have to set up a time to visit! I don't know that my "set-up" is worth getting green over. I'm not even sure it rates being called a "set-up"! It's a work in progress, as is everyone's place. It's just "home"!
