OK, calling all the sexing experts! I am growing these birds out for NurseBecky, and she needs four pullets out of this group! What you are looking at are 4-wk-old birds (4 SLWs, and 2 Ameraucanas). Please give me your expert guesses so she can make an educated decision. Here they be:

SLW #1 (If it's not a Roo, I'll eat my hat)

SLW #2:

SLW #3:

SLW #4:

Ameraucana #1:

Bumping this....dying to have some more opinions on my babies, girls or boys?

Thank you SO much for the offer, but due to my daughter's severe allergies, we have our ducks and chickens on a special "diet" - they are not allowed ANY soy and pretty soon we are going to have to limit the corn in their feed (I guess I just need to start making my own. GRR) because she is developing a sensitivity to corn. I really do appreciate the offer though, and wish I could...then again, maybe MY waistline will thank me for NOT getting any, because I would be baking up a storm with those eggs!!

I still may have to use that threat...that or "I'll send you to the glue factory" threat...does that work on ducks or only horses and cows?? LOL
I volunteer YOUR kids to come scope the place out so they can find them for me.

I suppose this weekend since we are going to be clearing up some of the brush, we can sneak a peak around, but honestly they are in 1 of 3 places ALWAYS: under the deck, in the feeding area or ON the deck looking into the kitchen window - talking to me telling me it's time for their snack!!

The deck area is clean - well, perhaps clear would be a better word...its poopy under there...lol, no eggs in the coop that resemble a duck egg, not sure where else to look. BOO
I don't have them locked up, but I still can't seem to think they are laying...I sure wish they would ANNOUNCE it like my chickens do!! LOL
<sigh> Now I am just jealous of all of you!! I am going to just HOPE I go out one morning to a "missing" duck and find her "perched" atop a HUGE pile of ducklings then...or eggs...either would suffice!!

x2 So sorry to hear of your loss Matt...I know Cochins are a special breed - mine were near and dear to my heart!!

I don't know about you all, but I am ready for SPRING and WARMER weather. I'd really REALLY like to open up the house to 70 degree weather and NOT have to put on boots just to walk in the yard!!
On a funny duck note: Cadbury was bathing in a mud puddle yesterday despite the fact that just 2 feet away from him, he had a nice BIG pool to play in...nope, it was a mud bath for him. LOL.
Have a GREAT Friday everyone!!

Well, that rules out my eggs. Lol, it was worth a shot.

I'm on a duckling hatching thread here on BYC and there is one person who gets cracked grains for her flock from a mill. She showed a pic of what the feed looks like, but I have no idea what's in it. Anyway, she lives in WA state, and so I asked her where she gets the feed, and she said just look up grain mills in my area to see what they have available. It might be worth a shot for you to get something that is soy free, and possibly even corn free.

Here is the link for the pic she posted:

Matt - so sorry to read about your rooster. I know that is sickening. Fingers crossed that maybe you will have a fertile egg from him that turns out to be a gorgeous cochin boy.

I had some MAJOR rooster drama yesterday - just lovely weather for it. The boys went out early and I came back in to work on a paper. An hour later I went out and 2 of them were a bloody mess! I don't know what got into them but they suddenly turned it so spawns of satan. Just tore each other up. SO, I spent the day turning their huge pen into several separate runs. It will work temporarily until my DH can make it more permanent. I brought the worst boy in to wash him off and doctor his comb. I never knew they could bleed like that! Goodness gracious. I left him in the bathroom since it was frigid and snowing/sleeting outside all day.

Should I assume that they will no longer be able to go out together??? If so, they will just have to go out on a day, I guess.

Tarheel birdy - I am not that confident in sexing. I am sure you will get some expert advice on your babies from folks much more knowledgeable than me!

My third Cream Legbar finally hatched yesterday (after a tad of assistance). It was another pullet so I've got 3 cream legbar pullets now. I've got 2 more of them in the incubator due next week, I think.

Also found out the frizzled Tolbunt Polish egg I was given at the chicken show is fertile! Candled it yesterday and it is nicely veined. To my son's delight, the call duck egg he got is also fertile!

I have no idea about hatching duck eggs or even what a call duck is (as opposed to a mallard) - anyone know?

Thanks and enjoy the sunshine!

SEE...then they just can't be laying. I don't let them out until late morning and they are locked up before dark (I fear the coyotes/boars/cats/dogs/etc... around here)...so they SHOULD be laying in the coop if they are laying at all. Either that...or they are holding them in until they are released (around 9-10am) and laying while my back is turned...those EVIL girls!!

I doubt we will find the nest with any eggs as the coons/opossums and such have been out in abundance lately - had an opossum visit my trash can last night (poor thing didn't find anything useful...LOL)...so IF there are eggs, they have probably been eaten, that's my guess.

Who knows...maybe I'll get lucky and find some this weekend and it would be a GREAT surprise!!

Did you all see that by Tuesday it's suppose to be 80?? I sure hope we DO warm up...I want to start getting my summer veggies planted outside...LOL I've been craving watermelon this ENTIRE pregnancy!! LOL

My silkies are having the worst time hatching. I don't know what the problem is, but I am beginning to feels sorry for them and all their setting time. I am looking to buy newly hatched silkies or eggs that are about to hatch. I am in the Asheville area. Thanks ahead of time.
