I have done it both ways, with a nest box and without. Mine usually don't use the nest boxes. They lay their eggs beside it. My broody right now is setting on eggs right beside the nest box on the floor. But they are all different and have different preferences. My nest boxes for them are on the ground and the front board of the nest is about 2-3 inches high. They don't seem to have any problems getting in or out. I have a little pullet that started out laying on the floor and is now laying in the nest box. It is so exciting when you find your first Silkie egg!

Great! Thanks again for the good info. I will tell hubby we need to put some down low. He was just going to get those plastic ones at Tractor Supply that attach to the wall and put them down low for them....? I guess I could put a 5 gallon bucket on its side for them too - might not look as nice but it would be a lot cheaper! LOL!

How do I get in touch with Mary? Is she on this thread?

I don't have any call ducks for sale.. as I am growing out some for myself. But I do have fertile hatching eggs.

I have 2 blue-bibbed drakes and one pied drake over a blue-bibbed hen and a butterscotch hen. They are running on my back yard together.

be careful with a bucket! I had a sikie cross (same size of a silkie) hatch out 29 eggs in a 5 gal bucket that was upright

Thanks so much you all for helping me with this. I've been hitting dead ends everywhere! I finally got a return email from a lady in Ohio who has some babies. She sent out 3 to me today via Express Mail. Hopefully, they will be here in the morning before 7am and my post office is expecting them. She seems to be very reputable, has been breeding them for many years and breeds for showing and has written a book about waterfowl.

Now, I will probably get 15 emails from folks who have them locally for a LOT less! LOL!

Hopefully, the drama is over for now, thank goodness. The chick is pecking at the little baby duckling now so I'm going to have to remove her so she doesn't hurt the tiny thing.

I'm hearing a lot of good things about this little guys - can't wait to get them all settled.

I'm off to search the pastures for guinea eggs and then chores!
