North Carolina

Welcome to all the new folks!! Glad to have you with us and we hope you feel right "at home" here!!

Wild - oh my!! I do hope they are able to trap them and you don't have to worry for your babies!! My uncle use to own a cougar and even though she was a "pet" she still scared me to NO end!! You could tell she was a WILD animal and if she wasn't declawed (required by the state and just CRUEL IMHO) and had her teeth filed (again state law...before they outlawed "wild" pets) I could picture her mauling him to pieces. <shutters> At 6mo old, she was HUGE so I can just imagine what this poor lady went through.

On the chicken front: I SHOULD have some babies this weekend!! Mama's day 21 will be tomorrow "evening" if that counts - so I am anxious to see how many out of the 12 hatch. I think we should take up a pool to see just how many of (however many hatch) them turn out to be roosters...LOL Then we can see if my 98% rooster hatch rate is still accurate. I was given PROMISES (haha...JK Beth) that these are all hens....hmmm....maybe she said these eggs are hen eggs...I guess that could mean they were eggs from a hen (you know...in case I thought roosters laid eggs too)....hmmm...nope, I'm going with the promise of all pullets, yeah!! LOL
Have a great day everyone...I'm off to the store in a bit to gather supplies to make a Diaper Motorcycle Cake for a friend!!

Dang! I didn't even know there were cougars in North Carolina!

Oh, there are plenty of cougar here! I saw one 2 years ago that was the size of a german shepherd - BIG! They are VERY elusive. You rarely see them. Then, a friend called us and saw one about a mile from our house crossing a road. At that time, my husband FINALLY believed me - that I HAD seen a cougar down at our stream that runs along the back of one of our pastures. That is when he agreed that we could get a livestock guardian dog! It was that, and the fact that we woke up to a coyote about 30 yards from the house just standing there looking at our Australian Shepherd barking like mad at him.

We've had Banjo (italian maremma) about a year now and have not seen a coyote (or cougar) since then! We have even had bear in Greensboro before! Crazy!!

I have never seen a bear here, but my neighbor claims to have seen one a few weeks ago and a lady who lives down the road, probably a mile away, claims to have seen a mama bear with cubs. I know they are in the area, we just had a report on the news a couple of weeks ago about someone spotting one in their yard in Wilmington, they even had pictures. Should I be worried about bears getting my chickens? I've never heard of them being an issue.

Wow! I'm gone for almost a week (no internet), and get back online to over 150 posts in this thread alone!

Hope everyone is doing well this rainy week. I've got some eggs that I'm leaving in the nest, in hopes it'll convince one of my big girls to go broody. I really need some full size chickens! Of course, they won't be "full size" since the girls are, but the roos are bantams. I think I'm going to need to contact the breeder and buy some more big girls from her.

I haven't been getting any duck eggs, since all of my ducks decided to take turns sitting on one nest. Five eggs in the nest and anywhere from two to all four of my girls sitting on it at all times. Hatch "day" should be Mother's Day, so hopefully we'll get some girls laying again soon.

On a gardening note, we put in some seeds and seedlings, only to have the chickens find a way into the fenced off area that the garden is in, and scratch holes in the beds where the seeds were!!

Hubby threatened several chicken dinners...

Hi everyone!

I just saw there is a North Carolina chicken thread :)

We moved down here a few years ago, as my husband is stationed at Fort Bragg. We live in Fayetteville, right on the Raeford line.

We started keeping chickens less than a year ago and I LOVE it!!!!

I love seeing how many people down here are keeping chickens!

I was stationed at Pope AFB so I lived in the area for 4 years. I stayed in Harnett County. How many chickens do you have and what kinds?

I'm going to say I have 10 since that's the limit in the city ;)

I have a couple Barred Rocks, a silver laced & a golden laced Wyandotte, a couple Easter Eggers I obtained at the flock swap, and a silkie Roo :)

We also have a RIR pullet, a Tetra tint pullet, and a buff Brahma pullet.

I have some blue silkies, Americaunas, and a couple Welsummers in the brooder right now, but they will be downsized as I figure out which are males.

How long were you at Pope? Where are you now?

I get a lot of mixed results from the military who are stationed here, but I really like it...
