Dutch most look like hens but with being wet cant say 100% on the barred now with size on the barred maybe its a bantam

I tend to use the big wire dog kennels for qt of new birds. the 30 days allows for any sickness to show up, which might take a few weeks to show. Now with the stress of the sale and a new home the hens might not lay eggs for a few weeks, so don't worry about that. and yes alot of the egg producing type birds in the wca tend to be debeaked. Something to look for when you get there early next time

Sorry I had to take off from WCA early today. I really like meating people who share the love of fowl. I'm with the others on both the sexing, and the separation of the new and old. Even when I bring birds in from people like Beth or Ramerez, I still put them in a tractor away from all other birds. I can move the tractor, but I don't know that I can kill any invading illness that rears its ugly head, before I end up having to treat all of my birds. I have had to treat a group, or flock without medicating all because I kept them separated. I even brought home bugs on a cute little bird, but because it was contained, we were able to get rid of them quickly. Many things are also passed through the poo, so keep all clean. Good luck, and I did look, they were not mine!

Okay thank you!
I'm not on a very big lot and the rest of my hens free range.
Do you think building a chicken tractor in the morning would solve the issue, or at this point with them all being in the same yard, just be a waste of money?

I'm really kicking myself for this, I should have done more research before buying adults! I just got so excited about the prospect of more laying chickens!

Apparently they decided they didn't want to be in the coop and have taken to roosting on my patio! Their feathers are wet because they were running around in the rain instead of going inside, so that could make it more difficult. ALL are the size of my 3 month old pullets, and smaller than my 6 month old pullets and 18 month old hens. Okay so here's what I got, give me your expert opinions.... "10 month old LAYING Barred Rock" No comb, no wattles, bright red it's a cockeral my guess would be 8 weeks.... "Pair of Comet Hens" About the size of my 3 month old pullets so if these are over a year they are TINY as my hens and even 6 month laying pullets are bigger. No signs of crowing. Also, were debeaked (which I don't condone at all) and they never mentioned this in the auction. Guesses??? Pair of RIR hens (same size as the others shown and my 3 month old pullets) This is a pair of black australorp "chicks", was supposed to be 1 male & 1 female, but whatever they are they are the same sex.... No age given And the straight run Welsummer & Hamburg chicks
the comets and RIR are girls, maybe younger then the person said. The barred rock doesn't look like a barred rock to me..... is it's comb flat? Or does it look like the RIR's comb? If it is a flat comb its.... shoot.... starts with a 'D' cant'can't remember the name off the top of my head. The australorps look like a pair, they boy in back, the girl up front. If your new birds are already in with your others it is still a good idea to make some sort of seperate pen for them, for atleast 30 days, you can make them a temp run out of plastic fence, just make sure they are locked up in the tractor at night. Check them over real well for mites, treat even if you don't see any, and deworm them, then in two weeks do it again.

Good morning folks

it's the start of the week and it's wet........very
wet and promises of rain for the next 3 days

I'm all for some rain but I, for one, would like a
break between the days so it soaks in and does
not become a bunch of new swimming pools
throughout my yard

hope your Monday is a good one

I second that!! Although, my yard is already a pool and the ducks are loving it...the chickens - well they're not too fond of it, neither am I. LOL

Advice please: So Mama Broody hatched 7/12 eggs (day 21 was Friday), spent most of yesterday teaching the new biddies to eat, scratch, drink, etc... but by mid-afternoon went back to sitting on the remaining eggs (and the biddies). Do you think there might be a "late bloomer" in the mix, or by her being off the nest for a considerable time mean that those eggs are "done" and she was just sitting there because it's easier to warm her babies?? With all my other broody hens, they would push eggs out that they "knew" were duds or had quit, etc...she hasn't so I'm not sure what the rule of thumb is regarding the eggs.
Thank you for the suggestions on incubators. I am still leaning towards the Brinsea classroom kit because we could use it in our homeschool, but I just don't know. I'm completely open to those of you seasoned hatchers to "sway" me towards a particular incubator!!

After that...I'll be bugging some of you with questions on how to use it, how to set everything up and more!!

Hmm...I may get in over my head...then, I'll just have to blame all you ENABLERS!!

hehe...I'm going to attempt to clean today...my cleaning fairy quit and well, I just haven't felt like doing much in the cleaning realm when it's been all rainy/cloudy/gloomy out there. If it rains for the next 3 days...you may have to come get me...as not only will we be flooded in, but I may have gone stir crazy!! LOL. Have a GREAT Monday everyone!!
