I am at a loss for words! This just goes to show you how far we as a society have declined. When I was a kid/teenager we would have stopped, put our hazards on and helped the chicken cross the road - all while making jokes about WHY the chicken was crossing the road. It's a sad statement about our future leaders/voters/bosses/etc... I hope you find out who they are and they get their just comeuppances!!

Praying everything goes smoothly for your GF!! Do her a favor and find out exactly what she wants/expects from her labor/delivery and be her ADVOCATE!! My DH slept through my first labor (waking up only in time for me to push...

) and I was very annoyed at always being asked by the nurses, etc... if I was ready for my pain meds when they knew I was planning a natural no-intervention unless life threatening birth. We had a doula (labor coach) and she ended up being my advocate, but it would have meant a whole lot more had my hubby done it. (No worries, I STILL don't let him live it down that he slept...although only in jest now...immediately afterwards though....no comment. LOL). Remind her just how strong she is - that last phase before pushing starts really hits you and she may feel like giving up...that's when she'll need YOU to be strong for her and remind her what an amazing job she's done so far, etc... Of course this all depends on how well you two communicate and how well you respond to each other (I was too angry with DH for sleeping while I could NOT that I didn't even want to hear him counting for me. LOL. Poor man!!). Can't wait to hear about his arrival!! Once again...an early/pre- CONGRATULATIONS!!
Chickens and ducks are in lockdown here. Went out Monday to collect eggs...and NOT A SINGLE EGG in the coop - and I have NO idea where those buggers are hiding them!

I went from 5 eggs and 3 duck eggs to ZERO over night. Punishment = lockdown until I start seeing some eggs again!! DH collected last night - 2 chicken eggs and 1 duck egg...now to find where they are hiding the other eggs... I know we do not have an egg thief - unless a snake is sneaking in and out, but I would find that hard to believe as there is only 1 way in/out -but not impossible, I guess.

On a funny note...I ordered some fabric to make my girls two twin Dr. Seuss quilts. Got a HUGE box from UPS from the fabric store...only to find out mixed in with MY order was an entire bolt of REALLY expensive fabric (high quality PUL that normally sells for between $10-20/yd). Contacted the company to let them know as I am sitting on about 10 yards of this stuff...LOL, DH said - after learning how expensive it was - can't we sell it back to them?? LOL. If they tell me to keep it...I'm going to attempt to make a LOT of diaper training pants to see if I can convince my 12mo to start potty training....hehe, then I wouldn't have TWO in diapers - and of course that would mean less laundry and thus less chances of rain for everyone!! LOL JK

We do lazy composting. Everything goes in the bins. We don't turn it...the worms do that. When one bin is full, we start on the second. In spring, the finished bins go in the garden.

And Mama Nature doesn't separate things, so neither do we! And no smell, aside from the frshest stuff, but the chickens usually grab that, so no smells!

In my compost bin search I just found the most amazing toy on amazon! It's a 3 part compost bin in the first you put something organic like a banana peel, in the second they showed paper, and in the third is a styrofoam cup which takes 400 years to decompose. I could have this set up my kid's entire lives and it wouldn't look much different than the day they put it in. Wonder how many banana peels you could go through in that time? I teach them about composting and self sufficiency, but this will be an awesome visual. Really makes you think about this country's waste!

I hope everyone has a great day as well. I know I'm enjoying this nice weather that came through, hoping it lasts! Off to Lowe's and TSC, great day for some outdoor projects!

I need some help on a compost bin!!!

We had a worm bin that I started to try and compost, but they aren't producing very well so I'm just going to throw most in my garden and the rest to my chickens and be done with it!

A lot of table scraps go to the chickens already, but no banana peels, coffee grinds or egg shells which we go through a ton of.

We live on a small lot so I want something that doesn't smell too much.

Someone told me I have to keep the poo and the food compost separate? Is this true?
I've seen some pre-made bins online, are they worth the price?
What are you guys using?

why not put them in a ice cream pail and let them dry. After that you crush them down with the bottom of a cup or bottle and when its full you feed it back to the birds. Helps them with calcium for making new eggs

I went out this morning with a photo of the car, crushing my bird(neighbor got the whole thing on his game cam) and found the home of a very sorry 15 year old boy and his best friend. I showed the photo to the parents, who were extremely appalled at their son's behavior . They informed that he had just gotten his license and was told he could only go up and down the side street here, needless to say daddy went red in the face when he realized he went off the side road . I later found out that they raise chickens as well, the mother and I went out outside and talked birds for a while, and after much protesting she made me take a sweet little hen . Then to top it all off, about an hour the father and son pull up in my drive way, the father then asks if I need any help cleaning coops, I'll told him no, but he wants his son to pay for what he did. So he is now outside mucking my muddy flooded barn Thank God for good parents

I couldn't believe it I am totally floored by how they handled this, I just assumed they'd be like "O whatever, The chicken was in the road anyway." But I am impressed with their rresponse.

Well my barn/pig pen/brooder/rabbit room is clean after all the rain I was not looking forward to cleaning it out. The kid did a good job, and after awhile, I went out to help lay down new straw and sprinkle PDZ. The kid was asking questions about some of the 'unique' breeds(cochin and silkes) that I have, and I think after he left here he had a little bit of love for chickens, eespecially since he spent a good 15 mins holding my sweet little silkie girl. The dad still seemed angry at him and wanted to know if there was anything else he could do but I insisted they had done more than enough. I also found out, through the mother, that the dad is a construction worker and built there awesome coops, so I asked him if he would like some money to build me a 10x10 shed for turkeys out of all the old wood I have. He agreed and said he could start work on it this weekend should the weather stay nice. So despite losing my little roo, I got to meet a nice family and fellowchicken lovers
