Broodies just happen and while no one breed is guaranteed broodies
the two breeds that tend have broodie hens would be silkies and cochins.
Of course you can get broodies in any breed....just luck of the draw. There
are many breeds that have a high rate of broody hens but I like the mellow
attitudes of the cochins and silkies......unless someone messes with their brood
then they get right protective

They were shipped from Wilmington, NC to Fayetteville, NC and got here in less than 24 hours so I'm hoping they didn't get bounced too much in transit.  I have the turner off right now, I'll plug it back in tomorrow, thanks for the tip!

Curious to what you got. I am in the Wilmington area.

Edited: saw you got Lav Orp.

I will post pics as soon as they hatch. The guy was really nice and said if I'd rather wait an extra day he can send a bunch that are fresh. The auction was for 12+ and I was sent 20. They entered Bolivia (I guess small town near Wilmington) post office at 3:30 yesterday and I got the call from Fayetteville post office at 8am they were ready for pick up! Here is a link to the sale/seller

I paid $26.98 ($13.99 was the shipping $12.99 winning bid) which I think is a good price for them compared to other's I've seen.

Haha guess it was a good deal because I clicked on the link to make sure it works at the same auction shipping was bumped to $19.99 with a starting bid of $14.99 for the same 12+ hatching eggs!

I keep considering getting silkies again, but I hate that you can't tell the males until they're so much older. I was always giving away roosters...
I know my kids really want barred rocks again since their's are gone...

I want a silkie! But I don't want a rooster, and I don't need any more chickens... just ask my husband.

However, I do need some input -- advice...anyone?

I was just posting yesterday that my SLW girls are outgrowing the brooder. Well they have outgrown their brooder. They need to be out. I have been putting it off because I wanted them to get a little bigger. NOW is the time. They need to be out. They have been free-ranging together for a couple of weeks, they explored the coop, they retreat willingly to any chasing. Keep in mind my other 6 pullets are Leghorns that are about 10 weeks. The SLW girls are about 7-8 weeks. Here comes TS Andrea, dumping rain on us for the next 3 days... I don't want them to be locked in their brooder all day long... but I don't want to put them in a bad situation. Do you think it will be ok if we put them in the coop tonight after dark? If it rains all day they will likely all hang out in the coop tomorrow... should I lock them in all day to make sure that the SLW girls don't get chased out and are trapped in the run all day? Or should I let nature take its course and let them figure it out?

There haven't been any feather pulling issues, just a little chasing... but the Leghorns do that to each other too...

Chicken Dilemma. Help!

Hi Everyone, I hope you don't mind if I join this conversation. I am located in Sanford (between Fayetteville and Raleigh). Just picked up some lavender ameraucana hatching eggs from Coop Scoop Boogie this afternoon. Can't want for the little guys to hatch! Tammy

That would be great! Thank you. Ive got 25 guineas just hatched so hopefully that will help in a few months. Found out tonite that our neighbor has a severe tick problem and is getting guinea hens this month too! Our dogs go over to her house because she gives them treats so I wonder if thats where they are picking them up!?

Trivexis.... It is heartworm preventative, flea and tick. It seems to work ok... but as an outside dog I am not sure they can completely get rid of ticks.... See if you can find that!

We took a walk late yesterday (9pm) and saw tons of lightning bugs! One of our little dogs was trying to chase them - it was hilarious.
We don't have any lightning bugs around here. I tried to figure out why and I guess it has something to do with the salty air or something. If anyone else has a better reason please share!
