one main reason folks don't see them in the city
is the use of LOTS of pesticides........

I agree.
Though I will spray for those horrific creatures you guys down here call "pine bugs" (aka cock roaches on steroids)
We don't have them back home, and I don't care how long I live here I don't think I will ever get used to them.
No other bugs bother me, but I get chills just thinking about them!
The rest of bugs I like as long as they aren't biting me!

I've never heard of a pine bug. How interesting. Wonder where that came from? I've heard them called Palmetto bugs occasionally. Whatever you call them, they should remain Outside!

Hey I have an incubation question.
I was going to get an automatic egg turner, do I turn it off at day 18 since that's when you're supposed to stop turning?
The first time (and only time) I hatched eggs I turned them myself.
But they all hatched day 18 and 19 anyway.
I read online it's probably because the temp was too high.  I tried to calibrate the thermometer and  used 2, guess I need a new one.
All the ones that hatched were really healthy, just came a few days early...
Correct, no more turning after day 18.

Good morning folks

It is funny the conceptions that some people
have about chickens
my BIL had posted a pic of some silkies and said
they looked like aliens.....his DD2 thought they were
cute aliens and I posted my DD@ has some and they
are cute little chickens...... at this point I will tell you
his DD2 is an adult in her 20s.......anyway she got all
excited about the thought of them having chickens when
I offered hatching eggs and asked " Do they lay eggs?"
I smiled to myself and told her yes they do. She admitted
that was a silly question and then asked if you can eat the
eggs........she's on a roll here and I'm all but laughing hard
I suggested they get a bator and build a coop and I'd send
eggs and she said "yay......I see a BBQ and coop building
party happening" I told them that by this time next year
they could be BBQing their own chickens and she said
oh no.......chickens aren't for eating.....she is not a vegetarian
......so I said that we eat the extra roos and she asked if they
taste like regular chickens???? that's when I lost it

Remember if they were shipped to let them rest for at least 24 hours before you start turning them. You can put them in the incubator, but don't turn yet. They've had a lot of shaking and vibration, and that stretches the chalazae that holds the yolk in place. They need a bit of rest.

Uh-oh!
I'll unplug it now, it's been going about 2 hours hopefully that's not too long.

Also anyone know what "not in condition" means when referring to chickens??? That's a new one on me.

Any ideas on where I can get a silkie hen???

They were shipped from Wilmington, NC to Fayetteville, NC and got here in less than 24 hours so I'm hoping they didn't get bounced too much in transit. I have the turner off right now, I'll plug it back in tomorrow, thanks for the tip!

If I said my chickens were not in condition, I would mean that they were in a molt and looking ratty. Other people might mean they were underweight, or even ill. If someone uses that phrase, I'd find out exactly what they mean by it.
